I've got a question...

I'm not sure this is in the right folder so if it's not, I apologize!
I booked our upcoming vacation (early Aug) back in March for ASM and requested Toy Story as our first choice and 101 Dalmatians for our second choice. I was told they can't reserve but it's usually not a problem getting what you want and that it would be noted.
Long story short, I had read somewhere (allears?) that ASM was doing some construction and whatnot and Toy Story was one of the areas effected. I sent an e-mail to our Dreams Unlimited travel agent asking to what extent this was, etc. (cuz I hate to go, request that area and then not be able to see/enjoy it...this is our first time there and I don't want everything covered etc.) I just received and e-mail stating that both Toy Story and 101 D. is "preferred location"...anyone know what that means? (i've sent an e-mail but she's out for the rest of the day so thought I'd ask here) Do I need to assume that we now won't be in either because of this change? (which would be so disappointing!) What exactly is "preferred location" other then more $$, I'm sure. ???
I'm sure all areas are just as good as the others I'm just a tad bit disappointed. Nothing was stated to this effect when I reserved everything in March and we've been telling the kids we will be in Toy Story or 101 D. (as this is what I was told...they can't guarantee but usually it's not a problem...they took our first choice and second choice so we were to assume that we'd get one of those)
TIA!

They've been considered "preferred" buildings for several years now...I think it was around 2000-2002 that they did this because they were the most requested due to their locations. The preferred buildings are $10 or so more than the regular buildings and they are preferred because they are closer to the bus stops, food courts, etc. (Each All Stars resort has almost 2000 rooms, so they are massive.) Also, the Fantasia building is one of the preferred buildings.
Do you know if you paid the preferred rate? If you specifically requested those, you should have been quoted the increased rate.

I don't know and this was the first I heard that they were "preferred" actually. I'll have to scour our quote and see what we paid but I know I never was told that it was preferred or anything. (I happened to ask about the construction work being done and she told me it was "preferred") Hmmm...
I know that the giant Woody figure was damaged in some storm awhile back, and he was being worked on under a giant tarp-type covering when my friend was down there 2 weeks ago, that may be part of the construction. There was something about another icon, maybe some of the ones that are on the walkway rails of the buildings or something.
I posted under the Accommodations section about the preferred building changes when I saw it somewhere else, not sure now when that was. It may not have been changed to preferred until after you made the ressie, I'm thinking it was for stays after May 1, but I can't swear to it now. I don't know if they will honor your request without charging you the extra since/if it was made prior to the changes or not, it may not hurt to ask when you check in.
Hope this helps!
Only certain sections of Toy Story were once preferred. I think it was those facing the courtyards. If the ENTIRE section of Toy Story and Dalmations is preferred, that's a recent change. I'm pretty certain that Fantasia was always preferred.
We stayed in Toy Story in September, and requested it, and did not pay extra. Our room was on the backside of the building though...overlooking a parking lot.
Shelby, I posted on the "other" Disney board and got some responses that seemed pretty accurate...I emailed you about it!

Oh, okay..sorry.

Thanks everyone...here's the e-mail I got from our TA just now...
They changed Toy Story and Dalmations in May, after you booked. As the requests are already on your reservation, and if you also ask at check-in, you may be lucky and get one of these buildings – also, you are arriving at a good time for check-in!
I am not sure your exact dates but this is from the all ears rehabs page I just copied and pasted the
