Kids afraid of costumed characters?!?

I know this may be a ridiculous question, but dh and I really want to take our kids 8, 6 and 4 to WDW this year. Our problem is our 6yo is afraid of costumed characters. He's just one of those kids who doesn't like them, but he has gotten better in the last few years. He won't shriek unconcontrollably anymore (LOL) but he won't go near them. And when one is near us he keeps an eye on it at all times to make sure they don't surprise him. Our 4yo has a little fear... but I think she is just playing off of the 6yo.
So... are we crazy? Are we horrible parents for even considering WDW? We have always joked with the kids that we aren't going to WDW until 6yo isn't afraid anymore. But now we really want to go!
Any ideas? Can we still have a great visit??
Thanks,
Laura

Yes, you can have a good time!!! My son was 4 when we went to disneyworld for the first time. Being the not so bright mom that I am, I scheduled a breakfast at the crystal palace the first thing. Needless to say ds hid under the table most of the time. Dd loved it though! So maybe don't do any of the character dining although my ds prob would have been fine with the princesses just not the heads.
Have lots of fun! Just don't push the characters and you all will be fine. I think they will love all the rides and everything else. It really is magical!
the beauty of wdw is you can keep your distance from the characters if you want to.
