My own "survey" question :)

I read somewhere else someone's comment saying "EMHs can be great too" or something to that effect...I know some folks always stay off-site (and so don't have the option) and even those who do sometimes prefer to sleep in/go to bed early and forego EMHs...yet others specifically avoiding, thinking those parks are more crowded...and it occurred to me to ask the whole community here: What do YOU think about EMHs? What has been your experience? Do you have a preference for the morning vs the evening ones, or for certain parks vs. others? And most of all WHY do you feel the way you do - I hope this will be an interesting thread!

I guess I'll go ahead and post my own reply. Even though we stayed on site, we pretty much didn't take advantage of the EMHs, for one specific reason: DS9. That boy is not only NOT a nightowl, he can get pretty cranky when he's tired! So we stuck to regular park hours and enjoyed relatively early evenings most nights (other than the ones when we'd planned to stay for a special event). This kept the planning simpler also, since we didn't have hoppers.

Anyone else?

We, on the other hand definitely are night owls, all 3 of us including DD 9, and we are definitely not morning people, so we would usually not take advantage of a morning EMH but we did use the evening EMH at AK and stayed till the midnight ending of the Halloween party.

At AK we found the crowds to be much lighter, but since it's a smaller park with fewer "rides" open for EMH those that were tended to have longer lines than they'd had earlier.

It was different at MK though and the crowds definitely got lighter and the lines shorter as the evening wore on.

Hi Carole! (I'm enjoying your TR, btw!)
So are you saying the AK evening EMHs weren't really worth it? Interesting.
I have heard good things about the MK EMHs! In fact DH and I wished we could take advantage of those, and maybe some day we will if we go by ourselves! The one night we stayed until closing there, we rode BTMRR about 3 or four times in a row with no lines late into the night, and that was a blast!

We practically love for EMH - especailly morning ones. The reason isn't a simple one but instead is multi faceted. Well I guess it could be summed up in that we like them becuase they work for us! LOL So some reason we like morning EMH

  1. The kids are up anyways, so why not?

  2. afternoon breaks are an essential park of our plan - mostly due to the dynamics of the personalities involved so getting an early morning start makes our mornings more productive

  3. we've seen the good stuff before the crowds roll in and get to enjoy the secondary stuff and revisit the good stuff at a more leisurely pace

  4. great photo opportunities!

  5. it's now tradition - LOL

Some reasons we like evening EMH

  1. most of us are night owls and if the little two are tired (only likely for the middle) my dh can take them back while oldest & I enjoy ourselves

  2. the focus shifts from the park as a whole to rides rides rides since so much else is shut down. evening EMH is when we hit or revisit the popular rides

  3. going down the hill of Splash Mountain during fireworks ROCKS!

  4. Haunted Mansion at night? extra cool

  5. Elevator of Tower of Terror opening to a twilight lit park - freaky cool

  6. Front car of Mt Everest looking at the lit up Castle and Speaceship Earth from the top where the track is broke - wicked

Some reasons we like EMH overall

  1. we go during the off season for lower crowds, but the downside is often that the park hours are shorter so EMH allows us to get as much from the park as a normal day during regular season - w/o the crowds or heat. :-)

I am kind of on the fence about the EMH. I would love to be able to take advantage of the morning EMH, but have found that waking the boys that early just causes extra grumpy boys. I am a firm believer of making rope drop though. I do think early EMH at MK and the water parks are worth the "sacrifice" of sleep. But, I don't think I would want to hit a park for early EMH without having the option to park hop. It seems like the park gets super crowded between 10 and 10:30.

We really haven't taken advantage of evening EMH. DH and I went to EPCOT one night while my parents stayed with our boys. We enjoyed it, but the lines were really long and there were no FP left. We did stay at MK for EMH one night on our last trip. We only stayed about an hour since the boys were getting tired, but we decided that it was much easier to get out of MK via the buses during a EMH night verses a regular park hour night. I think once the boys get older, we will probably take more advantage of late EMH. Again, I really like having the option to hop that way we can spend the day in a park then hop to the EMH park. It seems like we don't have to fight the crowds as much that way (could just be in my head, LOL).

On my honeymoon, I insisted that DH and I take advantage of EMH every morning, but by the end of the week, we were so tired we would go back to the room in the evening and never make it back to the park at night, LOL. I guess my DH is glad we have kids to slow us down :) If it were up to me, I'd go the early EMH, take a nap, then hit the evening EMH...my motto at WDW is "you can sleep at home for free", LOL.

We've used Ridemax the last couple times we've been at the World and it specifically suggests avoiding a park with EMH.

We love EMHs, but don't always manage to be able to work them into our schedule.

When we went this summer, we took advantage of the EMH in the mornings.

I personally LOVE working the EMH's at night. They get the music rockin' and we get to have a blast. For a few weeks there we had the dj set up under the sorcerer's hat so the block party was right there next to me and I was dancing with all the kids and having a blast.

I have never done EMH as a guest so I can't really answer your question, but now that my dd is older, I think it would be fun.
