NE1 been to Disney Vero Beach Resort?

DH and I are still discussing our options as to what to do for Christmas. I would love to go to WDW, but not only does DH HATE crowds, my almost 3yo DS does not use the stroller and prefers to walk. Not exactly a good combination. So I started thinking that maybe we should drive down to Vero Beach and stay at the Disney resort there. Has anyone been to this resort? Can I expect some characters there? Has anyone been at Christmastime? Details, details, details

edited to add: I just went to the website and noticed that it's a DVC Resort. Do I have to be a member? Is there a fee? Any details would be helpful.

You know, I have never been, but your post made me think it's probably a good idea for you to look for a calmer place to spend that time, for everyone's sake. Especially since you live in the area, it might be possible and smarter for you to find a less crowded time to visit the World for (I assume, is it) the first time with DH and DS? Good luck and look forward to hearing more from you!

We have not stayed at Vero yet, but you can usually rent rooms at DVC resorts.
