question about the Animal Kingdom Resort
| Thu, 08-31-2006 - 6:59pm |
Hello there Board! I just started planning our family's WWD trip. We will be going from Jan 30th thru Feb4th. We are so excited.
I was wondering if any of ya'll out there have stayed at the Animal Kingdon resort when you visited WWD. If so,what did you like about it? Hate about it? Find surprising about the resort? Any feedback anyone would like to share with me would be awesome.
Hope everyone is having a great day!

We loved AKL!
I find myself in two minds about AKL: We stayed there in September last year and while we overall enjoyed the experience there were things we were slightly disappointed with.
It was fabulous to be able to sit on the balcony and look at the animals just outside, however I was surprised to find how narrow the balcony was - it was a squeeze to fit 3 people on there at once (only 2 chairs in any case) and if you stood up suddenly you ran the risk of pushing your chair through the glass window of the sliding door!
I found the dark decor and low light levels to be slightly depressing even though I know it is in order to recreate an authentic African ambience. It was September/October when we stayed and the weather was damp and humid, so perhaps if we'd stayed in July/August we'd have been merely grateful for the cool feel.
The rooms were a nice size and we had 2 queen beds which was lovely and even comfy for my 6ft DH.
The pool while nicely themed with a slide, was small and not nearly as nice as the one at Coronado Springs where we'd stayed the previous year, and also it was quite a hike from the rooms and entailed walking through the lobby while wet on the way back.
The Boma restaurant quickly became our all time fave, we all (even my picky then 7 yr old DD) found things we liked, in particular the soups were a big fave. The Mara is the counter service, it has a good selection of food, nicely cooked.WE didn't try the other more upscale one.
There is usually something going on in the lobby and the store has an interesting selection of souvenirs.
The bus service was good and we rarely had to wait long for a bus to any of the parks or DTD.
On the downside we found the front desk service to be very slow - twice it turned out to be faster for my DH to walk down to the desk and ask our question than to wait for someone to answer the phone.
While my DD unreservedly enjoyed her stay and is champing at the bit to stay there again, DH and I decided that we would be unlikely to go back - at least not until we've tried a few other places!

This was out favorite resort. We thought the pool was the best it was a great size to us plus with a small child with us we enjoyed the zero entery that was our little one played but we did not have to hold him in the water.
Someone else mentioned that there was always something to do and we loved this also. The story telling was our personal favorite.
We did not pay for a savana view but we were upgraded to a pool view which we enjoyed.
I would stay here again in a heart beat. We will be a WD in 27 days but will be staying at Caribbean beach as it is only for one night and we wont be at the resort much at all so I just could not pay that price for a bed to sleep in.
I've also stayed at Port Oleans Riverside and Wilderness Lodge but Animal Kingdom was our best.
Good Luck.
