we used it one year when my dad bought my kids a trampoline for Christmas, but didn't want it to have to be in my house for weeks before the big day. He used lay away, paid all but $1 for it, put it in my name, then, when we were ready to deal with it, we went and paid it off and picked it up. That was about 5 years ago.
Other than that, I haven't used layaway in years. I get paid monthly, so to make weekly payments doesn't help me, and if I have to pay extra, I might as well just put it on my credit card.
Lay away is just really good for huge items, but at least at Walmart, getting our stuff took a couple of hours of waiting.
