Seems weird in this day and age of eating healthier that this is a fairly new found thing. I've caught a commercial lately where they talk about it blowing up if you don't defrost it first but that's the only tip I've heard. (I'm not sure what the commercial is advertising either. LOL) But, hubby wants to try

Here's a site with instructions on frying a bird. I love fried turkey but I'm a big wimp about hot oil so we ordered our fried turkey this year. :-)

Thaw it completely, dont fry it in a closed area, have it set up out in the yard somewhere, use peanut oil to fry it in, dont leave unattended, wash and clean it just like u would if putting in the oven, make sure it is dried well, and u can also marianade 24 hours before inserting into deep fryer..

We did this one year.. well, friends of ours deep fried the turkey. They mixed up some herbs and softened butter and injected it into the turkey. It was tasty ;)

You have already gotten great advice, so I can only think of two things to add.

We did end up deep frying our turkey a couple years ago. We brined it first and it turned out great!! DH got a deep fryer that shut itself off every 15 minutes so we couldn't overcook it (too much anyhow! LOL) We did one in an old fashioned wood stove that year - cooked with lots of fresh herbs. We couldn't decide which one was better!

The deep fryer was a challenge when trying to make boiled peanuts though - what a pain to go hit the button every 15 minutes so it would continue to cook for several hours! We do those on the stove now!
