I made my own car.
We had ours today.
My Tiger, Sean, and my DH made a cute car. At first, Sean wanted something that looked like the space shuttle that he had seen somewhere (but I'm sure it wasn't a beginner level project). So, I talked him into something a little more wedge shaped. He decided upon an orange car with blue scribbles (for lack of a better word) over the orange on the sides. Then on top, he wanted a picture of a Tiger Cub tiger. And he put his pack number on it and his age. It was really cute. Sean watched for all the machine tools times and did the sanding and some spray painting himself. That was hard because he couldn't hold the can and press the button with the same hand. He did the blue scribbles by himself and put on the stickers. Our pack doesn't have any awards for looks, to help prevent the parents from taking over the cars as much. Even so, there were some nice looking cars in the pit.
So, race day, we saw the other 4 Tiger Cub cars and I'm thinking to myself...ours looks pretty fast. Then Sean proceeded to come in last place. It wasn't even close. Sean was a good sport about it and didn't seem upset at all. I'm not sure why it was slower, but DH said he's starting work now for next year...and me might just have to make himself a car (because he was never a scout, and he wants his own!). I was very proud of myself for not doing a single thing to actually get the car ready. I do tons of stuff and I poke my nose in everywhere to help out. So, I'm just happy it was a memory that Sean and DH have.
Notable about the Tiger race was that the 2nd and 3rd place cars kept beating each other and they had to race 5 times to determine who would move on to race the last kid...who's car would have beat them both by a mile.
Oh I was just coming to ask about pinewood derby races. This will be my son's 3rd race, he is a bear and has won 1st place in his pack's race for the past two years. This year his car looks like a "wiimote" so I'm not sure how fast it will be. ;-)
Dh is the den leader in charge of the pack race this year, so I am trying to research how other races are done. Last year, we had a pizza party before the race. Can you tell me about your pack pinewood derby races?
I've not participated with this pack's race.
It's been a few years for Luke, but they had food for sale throughout the race--it ran all day long.
Only BSA kits may be used (the Pack provides the kit to every boy).
