The Middle School Chess Club is starting up soon.  The club is free, but tournament fees will be around $40.00 for the year.  The day changed.  That is going to mess up our schedule a bit this year since D has scouts on Monday and I will need to pick J up.  I'm not sure who we will tweak things.

Don't you hate when you think you have everything laid out, schedule wise and then ONE thing changes to mess it all up? Sometimes it's like a domino effect around here!

Chess club sounds cool! Is this his second year doing it?

J likes the club - I kinda like the tournaments that are close enough for a drop-off. Parents are not permitted to go into the tournament rooms, so it is a long day of sitting around waiting for the kids to return between matches.

Yes, this is J's 2nd year on the team. One of the school's best players moved up to HS. It will be interesting to see if the other really good players are returning.

Our school has't announced what is being offered in afterschool this year yet.  M. fell in love with chess at camp this summer, and wants to do it if it's offered this year.

I think I had heard mention of the possibility of a chess club starting at our school, but I haven't heard anything else.  I don't know if my kids would be interested.  However, we did get a really neat one player game at christmas time that is called solitaire chess by thinkfun.  Basically you set up each puzzle and on each move, you must capture another piece.  If the king is on the board, it must be the last remaining piece, so a helpful hint!
