I'd contact them anyway and tell them the size of the group.

I did send an email asking if I could be hooked up with the volunteer running the program. I've not heard back. I'll end up needing to call / go in to see if I can we can get hooked up :)

No but it sounds cute:) We did birdhouses for our bears at my house and that was a lot of fun. Thank goodness DH was able to run that meeting because those boys sure were excited to pound nails and anything else that got in the way of their hammers!

Whittlin Chip was done one day when my son and I couldnt be there... so we got the one boy's dad to teach it- he's an emergency room doc and works with the boy scout troop.

We start whittling chip with soap and a plastic knife & then expand it. Once we think they have that down we give them a pocket knife & wood. We did it in two meetings with J's group & then ended up adding in more meetings later in the year - most of the boys just didn't work on it again once they earned the chip. This year the pack is having a review session for the boys who already have it & then doing an intro for the new boys.

Do they do that as Bears?

Whittling chip is typically earned the Bear year. Around here the boys are told to bring their whittling chip card to resident camp.

Well, after you guys mentioned it, I got out D's bear book and found it. Apparently there was discussion at one of the den meetings but it just hadn't gotten beyond the discussion point. So I emailed our den leader and asked when we were going to do it and he said that he thought it would be a great plan for this next den meeting. So our boys will do it next week! I think they are really going to enjoy it.
