Hitchhiker thumb circle idea

Idea to use when saying promise... to get all kids to put up their right hand with the appropriate sign.

Stand in a circle.  Have each kid make a fist with his/her left hand with the thumb sticking out (like a hitch hiker).  Put your fist hands into the circle and grab onto the thumb of the person on your left (so it's in your fist).  This will make a tight circle of fists.  Now, the only hand available to make the sign for the scout promise is your right hand.  And you can use some sort of cheer or break at the end like they do sometimes before sports when you want to break the fist circle.

I hope that makes sense... it was a really cool idea that somebody showed us at the first roundtable of the year.  (Unfortunately, it was about the only thing that was worthwhile about the first roundtable).

I love that :)

I started that with my den years ago.  We now do it at the end of pack meetings.  We all put our left hand in the circle, make the sign with the right hand, and yell, "Akela, we'll do our best!" and then end with the sound our rank animal would make.  The Webelos typically yell Webelos or their patrol name (if they select one).

I think I got the idea from an old leader book.

The past 2 Roundtables have been painful.  It's been rambling announcements and running 30 minutes or more late.  I'm not saying the info isn't important ie price increase for 2014.  Were you notified of that yet?  Fees are going to be $24.00,

Yes- they went over it at roundtable and had some sort of a paper explaining it. I knew about it beforehand- probably from facebook on one of the scouting pages I follow. I also asked about if we should start doing just the Boy Scout oath and quit using the cub one since all of BSA is going to use just that one and everyone in the room except the one paid staff person looked at me like they hadn't heard this yet. I figure for incoming Tigers and new scouts and for all Webelos it makes sense for sure. He told me it would be fine to just move to that now. I'm assuming you heard about that change too.

Have you seen any literature on the new handbooks / program changes? I'm not sure why we have not seen any samples since the changes are supposed to be huge. I'm thinking someone should be piloting them & we would be able to preview.

I've seen nothing. However, I found that hitch hiker thumb idea in the front of one of the kids books- either wolf or bear. It's next to an idea that we started using- doing sign language with indian stuff as a closing. I guess that's why I never picked up on it- because we were doing the other things!
