Ian had his open house on Monday. I was signing up for various things, but I noticed that there wasn't any sign up sheets for scouts to be found. Does your school always have scouts info available at the back to school open house?
In our town they do it separately, which I think is a mistake, because only the people who have already decided to join scouts are going to come to the open house, whereas if they had it at School open house, people who hadn't even thought of it, might pick up the info packets.
Our recruitment night is on the 30th and I am sitting at a table at a grade school. I haven't ever been to that school and know nothing about any of the scout leaders, so it could be an interesting night.
I have to specifically ask for a table at Open House. We didn't have many people sign-up to receive more information, but I did pass out flyers to anyone who stopped at the table.
What I have seen in the past is that it is Kindergarten parents who really want scouts. By the time the kids are entering 1st and 2nd grade they are already swamped with extra curricular acitivities!
Our school is a private Catholic gragde school. We have a Scout info table at school registration at the beginning of August. Along with info on the Pack, we also have fliers inviting folks to our Back to Scouting/School Picnic/Rocket Shoot. We hold our Pack Registration night the first Friday after school starts at the end of August. We also do Boy Talks, and hand out fliers inviting new families to attend our September Pack Meeting.
Public schools can be hit or miss on what they will allow Scouts to do. Having your District Exec. talk to the School District/School Board, can help a lot.
Yesterday was "Rocket Day" and they seem to really be pushing the recruitment and even Donovan noticed it and mentioned it. I said "Well, some boys left to go to Middle school so now they need new boys" and he said "Well who wouldn't want to shoot off rockets? C'mon, it's awesome!!" LOL. So I guess we may get some new kids from that according to Donovan.
Since our Council merged districts the DE's are relying heavily on volunteers to run the boy talks and Round-Up nights. I imagine it is going to keep heading that direction due to finances.

Chris -
I agree with you that there should be a table.
Our DE has really been pushing hard to get adults in to the schools to have contact with parents / kids about scouting.
I went to roundtable this month and our person told us that there is no way
Well, our council merged with another council this past spring... We are now HUGE!
