Okay, there is the list on front page of each badge "booklet" that says what has to be done. Some read that as the goals and what needs to be done to earn it. Others say you need to follow the steps on other pages completely.

What do you do?  Do you modify things or follow the steps precisely?

I tended to stick to the book, if it said to be done in a certain way, we did. Some badges give you looser guides, and those can be modified.

There are some we simply can't do without major amounts of traveling and expense. So we are modifying some. But overall, trying to stick to book as much as possible.

For instance, in our area, they don't teach the dock rescue or whatever it's called for the safety award (Cadette level) until you are in lifeguard training -- which you can't do until you are in high school...so our girls can't learn it as Cadettes here. Instead, I had my daughter research it online and watch a how-to on youtube and read about it. Now that I think about it, I could probably ask a lifeguard I know to show her as well, but it depends if that person is available anymore this summer (swim lessons are done for year and she may have gone back to college city already due to her job there)

Usually, I just skip badges that we can't do due to location/expense .... but she had completed all other requirements for that badge on her own before I looked at it.

We try to follow pretty much what it says in the booklets. However, with the occasional one, we have modified but stayed within the spirit of what it was asking us to do or learn. The digital video one comes to mind. One girl was leading this one for our group and she came up with an idea that worked for one of the parts that was pretty good, but not what it said exactly, so I ok'd that for her to do with the group. We haven't quite finished it... guess it will be where we will start in the fall since none of them really seemed like getting together outside of camp.
