When do you give out membership pins and such? Do you give those at beginning of year or end of year?

Do you give all the awards at once or do you present them as they are earned?

I've been waiting and giving everything out at the awards ceremony at end of year, but was thinking it'd be nice if the girls had their GS pin and membership stars on sash/vest for the award ceremony.

There are a couple of things that get handed out on the spot, but most are kept for an awards ceremony which we do casually in a troop meeting about twice during the year and once usually inviting families or combined with something bigger or fun at the end of the year.

This year we are diverging a bit... Today, I handed out patches, pins, and the bronze awards for the girls who earned them already because we are taking a big trip early in June and the girls wanted their vests/sashes as complete as can be (and also since a lot of them will be bridging (which we are postponing till the end of summer to accommodate 6 more girls who have almost finished their bronze). Then at the end of the summer, we will have a bigger or more special recognition somehow to recognize the girls accomplishments and also for the bridging for those moving up a level. They will also just be handed the patches that were backordered. I don't think I'll hold them till the end of summer.

For some items, it's better to hand out right away or to at least have recognitions given every two- three months... the girls don't always remember what they did to earn the patches. Even today, I had some asking- what's this one- what did I do to earn it.

Depending on the age of the girls, you can do it different ways. When mine were younger, Junior and early Cadette, I would give them out at least twice a year, usually right before Christmas and then again at the end of the year.

Now I really only give them out at the end of the year. They don't earn too many so I do alot of fun patches. I also give out the year pins at the end of the year, as to me, that's when they have earned them. This year I had three girls receive their 10 year pin, so I included that with their bridging to Ambassador.

Whatever keeps your girls excited about Scouts, is the way you should do it!

i gave out membership pins at the end of the yr. some parents went ahead and bought thier daughters thiers. i was told by council its upon completion of the yr.

as for try-its and fun patches they get those as they come in the mail so about 3-4/month. i just label them with the girls names and lay them on the table with all my parent info handouts and parents come and pick them up. the girls tend to misplace them during meetings and some girls go home with other girls parents etc. i like the girls to get the patches as quickly as possible after earning them because they like that gratification as well as they remember what they did better and when we go on outings it looks nicer for girls to have a complete vest with thier earnings.

this yr we earned about 25 fun patches and 12 try-its.
