Taste of the World Event

We attended a service unit event today called "Taste of the World" and I have to tell you it exceeded my expectations, because I kept hearing leaders asking other leaders what they were supposed to be doing and that the event director was vague with the expectations. In a nutshell it was basically a thinking day type event with each troop picking and researchinga country then setting up a booth with food, etc from that country, and we had skits or introductions at the beginnging. As a Daisy troop we were part of the host country of Switzerland and all we had to do was bring cheese to pass out, the Junior troop hosting set up the booth and brought the chocolate. We had a great turn out, 10 out of our 24 troops hosted a booth and I think we had 3 Daisy troops attend with the host country. Most troops had project boards, food, swaps, and girls in costume. A troop did Mexico and had two pinatas that everyone got a turn to hit, another troop did egypt and built a pyramid. It was so great to see them all bring it together and all the girls had a great time. We have already decided to do this as a thinking day event next year and hopefully through word of mouth we'll have more participants and atendees. We are also talking about running it in the paper for the public to come and see what the Girl Scouts are doing.

Just thought I'd share what a wonderful event we had today.

Cool! I'm stealing that idea to pitch to the SU team.

One question: Did the girls go around to the booths together as a troop, or did they split up and just go where they wanted?

O.K., another question (LOL!): Was there a charge to attend the event?

no charge, each troop was responsible for paying for what they needed for their booth (ingrediants for the food posters paint etc) and the community center let us use their cafeteria for free. The leaders were instructed to leave one leader and half the girls at the booth and let the other leader and half of the girls walk around (preferably together but it was a meduim sized room so some did split up including one daisy leader who let her 4 and 5 yos wander freely but we won't go there) and then switch, so everyone got a chance to work the booth and to visit the other booths. Oh wait there was a cost, The troop hosting the event chose a stock patch from JoyCrest and if you wanted some (.90 each) you paid them and they placed the order, so the event cost .90 a girl to attend and any cost involved in setting up your booth.
