Update on Girl Scouts....

I have no idea if this is the board or if you moved again or ???

Seems it is still letting me post here & looks like other recent posts.

Anyway -- here is the new scoop & this time we might actually GET a troop...although I do feel bad that we may lose girls due to timing issue.

Seems we will be getting a Brownie Troop of 16?   I have to go look at the numbers again.     The leader who has it now as Daisy's basically was thrown into it and she does not want to do Brownies as she has a younger daughter and plans on starting that Daisy troop with her next year.

So, we will start up next Fall as 1st year Brownies with them.    I forget but are they Brownies in the summer?   I thought it would be nice to have just a couple of summer events since we don't really know the girls & they don't know us.   They are doing a bridging ceremony in May.    They are having a celebration next week, so we will probably stop in and get to meet the girls then...just a brief meeting.

They meet right after school now since most are working parents and about 1/2 the troop can't meet if they don't do it right after school.   THAT might pose a problem for us, so I'm not sure I can stick with that time plus a few other things the leader does to be nice for handling pick-up (basically babysits a few girls extra time) but I'm not comfortable with it not really knowing the girls, etc...

The nice thing is it is local, there is already a co-leader willing to continue if the time/date works for her and she is also involved in Cub Scouts although I don't know her since her son is younger but I know she has seen me (one of my hats is the awards coordinator so everyone sees me up front helping hand out the awards).

Well, let's see if this will let me reply to your post!  I have continued to come here since they moved stuff... but I understand that when they get other stuff under control, it will be re-merged with the sports board like it was.  Generally, things are still slow and I think they've kinda lost a lot of us due to the length of time it's taking them to get stuff sorted out.

The Daisy's would be considered Brownies from the time they do their bridging.  This could be anytime really from April through September, but most do it in May.  And if they are going to a Day Camp or other activity during the summer, they should go by the grade they will be in for the coming fall.

It would be great to have several get-togethers over the summer.  That's a great time to go camping, go hiking, go splash in a creek, go to a museum, go on a train ride, go to a farm, or a pizza place... tons of stuff to do!  And it would be really cool to do a little special ceremony to "say farewell" to the outgoing leader and "welcome" to the new leader... kinda to pass the torch so to speak.  But I would definitely invite her (since her daughter is likely to still be in your troop anyway) to come to the summer activities.  She already knows the girls and parents and that would be a great way to continue to work together and also build the bridge that you could be to the younger daisy troop... you would be the "big sisters" and maybe even do some tours or activities together from time to time.

I'm sorry that you have been waiting to jump in for so long.  I bet they could really use your help at day camp if they have it in your area and you could meet so many adults and girls that way!  They should be starting in January or so to do the planning for that.

happy scouting,

Jen

It did let you reply!!  Woo Hoo!!!   LOL!!!   Although, I think my kids are stuck at the ages I have in my signature since I haven't been able to update it.    It took me 3 login trys to even post this.  Also, no e-mail notifications like in the past (I always find that very helpful) but at least it worked.

We were looking at the council events that are offered now and it only goes until Spring.   So, good to know things we might consider next year if they are offered again but I do feel a bit in limbo...I want to let the leader finish out her Daisy year as she has planned, so don't want to change any of her ideas, etc... and then we can start from when we come in.    Basically at this point, we are just helpers coming along to meet the troop.

I'm not sure I'm up for day camp again.   I did it for 2 years, Carolyn went from entering 2nd grade through entering 8th grade...obviously as an aide the last couple of years.    The last time I did it, I was pregnant with Luke...it was an unbearably hot summer and I always tended to get the small fry unit.      Back then, I didn't work so it was easy to do -- now I would have to take a week off of work to do that.    They shut down the one that we went to so not sure I want to re-do that again (the last year was complete chaos & confusion).

I was thinking they would be considered Brownies after bridging but it's been a while.    I do think the current leaders daughter will still be in our troop, at least it sounds that way.      I'm really not sure how many are continuing or ?     We will that out later in the fall I'm sure once we get the meeting day set.   It may not work out for some of them & they only meet once a month now, I know I would like to meet at least 2x month as just seems you get more accomplished that way.     I like the idea of a farewell/welcome ceremony.    I'm thinking that might be incorporated into the bridging in May somehow.

The leader seems really nice and I'm glad it is a good transition, not one that a leader is leaving on a sour note type of thing.  She's willing to help me get everything transitioned easily, etc...     The planner in me is just trying to figure out where are they at & where do we need to be heading.   I know there are the journeys and all of that but the nature of the girl's personalities dictate things.    I figure we can just start from the beginning of Brownies and although most of it may be review if they actually know the GS Promise, etc... it is always good to review & earning the GS Brownie Way badge is a good start.
