What do ya'll think-end of yr. gift idea

Well...for a while now I've been mulling over some ideas of end of the year, inexpensive, gifts to give my girls. At one point I was thinking of doing a troop photo transfered onto a t-shirt. But then today, as I was getting our family ready for a camping trip later this week, an idea popped into my head.

Tonight I was making "camping pillows" for my kids. Basically, I'm taking an old t-shirt from each of them (they picked them out), sewing up the holes, stuffing it..and viola a "camping pillow" (takes up lots less space in the car and the tent!

So...then I got to thinking that it might be a cute idea for my girls. We're going to be working up to camping at the end of next year (at our Spring Camporee) so what would be better then to give them each a home made Camping Pillow. Now I could use some ideas....

What I've hashed through my head is to get a white t-shirt and put a troop picture on one side and maybe something about the troop (the Troop # or maybe some great one line "motto" or something). Then at our end of the year sleep over, give them out and then have each girl sign each of the other girls' pillows. I could even use fabric paints to put their names on them to personalize them.

Or I could get different color t-shirts, and just decorate one side with Troop info (I don't think I could put on a troop pic since the T-shirt is not white) and personalize it somehow. And then let them sign the backs.

Or I could make the pillows and have them decorate them themselves.

Or I could have them each draw a picture of themselves as a girl scout and sign their names, take the drawings, scan them into the computer put it on the transfer paper and then put that on the pillows. Put the troop number and year on it.

Any other thoughts? My mind is realing at the moment LOL!

Thanks for any input....Margaret

I absolutely *love* all those ideas! I think I might have to steal it (giving credit where credit is due, of course!) :o)

My dd went to a slumber party where they decorated their own pillow cases. After they decorated them, all the girls signed them. Melissa LOVES this pillow case and it's been on her bed since that party. I'm sure your girls will love them as well.

Hey, I'm definitely going to steal your idea, and give you no credit whatsoever - ROFLOL!!

IMHO, the more you can let the girls do the decorating themselves, the better. A group photo would be nice right in the middle, which give the girls plenty of room to do their thing all around it with fabric markers/paints.

If your budget permits, you might consider some other embellishments, such as small bows, buttons, lace, etc. They can be attached with fabric glue around the edges (so they don't interfere with comfort). Of course, with use, they will prolly fall off eventually, but think of how proud the girls will be of their extra fancy pillows in the mean time!

Snug, you have such awesome ideas! Your troop sure is lucky!

Have I told you that you have the most awesome ideas! I think I may be stealing this one too. I don't know how many times I have said "yeah I got this idea from my friend in N. Carolina" LOL.

I love the idea of adding other embellishmentsto the pillow case as well. I think the girls will really enjoy it!

LOL! I don't need credit...make it your own LOL!

I love the "embelishment" ideas! Bows would be so cute!

And I agree...the more the girls do the more personal it is. Now to get a group shot with ALL 13 girls! I've yet to get that. For some reason I never have all 13 at anything LOL! Still got about a month before I need to kick it into high gear LOL! Our sleepover is June 7/8 and that's when I want to give them out :)

Thanks for the additional ideas :)

You're too funny Carrie!! I'm sure you've got some great ideas! With meeting every week and with 24 girls you gotta have something up that sleeve LOL! Now start sharing so I can steal something from my CA buddy ;)

Margaret, EXCELLENT idea! I have another idea that goes along with the "camping" theme, as well...how about duffle bags? You can make them easily out of worn-out jeans...you just cut the seams in the sides of the legs, and stitch the sides and bottom together to make a "bag"...then, you make slits in the waistband and thread rope or heavy cording through the slits to make the top close. The girls can then use fabric paint, sequins, or whatever to decorate the bags. I did one of these with my Daisy this year, and she LOVED it!

You could do individual shots of the girls scattered around the cover, that way they could sign under their own photo.

I was thinking this too since I don't have a group shot of all 13 anyway! Thanks! Margaret

Oh this is a great idea! We've already got blue jean sit-upons (same idea...sew up the top and legs (we used either shorts or cut off the legs), stuff plastic garbage bags in thru the zipper (makes them water proof!) and ran a cord through some belt loops to make a handle...the girls decorated them with fabric paints). The blue jean duffle bags might be our "back to scouts" project next year. We're thinking of maybe doing an overnighter-planning meeting with the girls some time in Aug. to get the year going. They'll be in 2nd grade and can become more involved in the planning of the year. This would be a great project for them. Maybe I'll go ahead and start asking parents to donate an old pair of blue jeans. I'd think an adult pair would work better right?

THanks! Margaret

I would suggest an adult pair, since a child's pair (especially at that age) would be "outgrown" quickly. I used an old pair of my Spousal Unit's for my Daisy.
