Fundraising without begging?

I was recently put in charge of finding a fundraiser for one of DD's extracurricular activities. I didn't realize how hard this would be because a lot of fundraisers just seem like begging for money or selling cheap catalog stuff. Is it possible to have a fundraiser that doesn't feel like you're begging for money? What are some that you've done that were a success?
You could do a spaghetti dinner and do a 50/50 raffle. Maybe local businesses would be interested in sponsoring the team. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask; the worst thing they could do is say no. Bake sales are always fun. Car washes (when the weather gets warm). You could also buy fundraising boxes of candy. Those are always pretty good moneymakers. That's all I've got off the top of my head. If I can think of anything else, I'll post them.
