BCP and TTC

I hope this is the right folder! :)

I've been on the BC pill since I was 17 - so 12 years (I can't even believe that!). I've heard from random sources that being on the pill can affect your fertility, and the longer you're on it the worse it can get. Now, I'm not sure how true this is - maybe for the super high dose pills that came out in the 60's or something, or maybe it's still true?

Also, how far in advance of TTC should you go off the BCP? I've heard that you should use a backup method for a while after going off the pill for a few months to prevent complications - does anyone have any info on that? Does it really matter these days with low dose pills?

Any light anyone can shed on these for me would be appreciated!

Thanks for the info! I am quite thin right now but haven't been off BCP since my doctor thought I had PCOS because I hadn't had a period for a year when I was about 17 and put me on BCP. That is also why I am nervous to go off the BCP until we are really ready to start trying.

It's nice to hear that clomid worked so well for you though, that is really exciting and positive:) TTC is still over a year away for us but the advice and support will be very appreciated when the time comes:)

*waving* Hi Ash! I'm Jess, Sophie's co-cl :)

I don't want to threadjack, so I'll be brief LOL. I do have PCOS, I was diagnosed at 19 years old and told I'd probably never have kids. With my oldest (he is 10.5 years old) we tried for 2 years using increasing doses of clomid. I'll be honest, I don't think I was monitored as closely as they do now. My sister also has PCOS and is TTC and using clomid now and she only gets 1 or 2 months on each dose. Anyway, we tried using clomid off and on for 2 years. Then it was too hard emotionally so we stopped TTC...and a month later we got a BFP. With my second we used no BC after Spencer was born, and 8 months later we did the highest dose of clomid, our one and only shot of it. It worked :) With my next 3, I had lost a lot of weight (the PCOS caused me to gain a lot of weight in a short amount of time) after my second was born I lost weight and was very close to my goal weight. That seems to help me. If I maintain my weight then my cycles will stay regular. If I gain weight my cycle starts to go wacky. But, with my last 3 babies, I was able to get pregnant within the first month or two of trying.

I HTH! If you ever have any questions or need to vent (because PCOS really sucks sometimes) feel free to email me through my profile!

I don't think she did anything special just your regular TTC, she was actually told she probably wouldn't have kids, went in for a routine blood test and voila they told her she was pregnant. I'll drop Jess an email though and find out. I know there is a PCOS board though I bet it would be worth lurking there for TTC tips :) xxx

Do you know if she had to do anything special to get pregnant? How cool, I certainly don't feel as hesitant about TTC now:)

I also wonder if it might depend quite a bit on what BCP people are taking in terms of how long to wait. I am on a super low dose hormone pill, so there is pretty much no way something could stockpile in my body unless I went crazy and took like a whole pack in a day LOL. I think some of the more traditional pills with higher dosages are probably different though, like that is why Kelly's package would tell her to wait a month and mine doesn't have anything like that.

Hey Alyssa,

I just wanted to say that I've had several doctors say that BC actually protects fertility. Not b/c of the pill itself per say, but the way that it works it makes your CM/CF thicker (as in, impassable for sperm). The thicker stuff actually helps prevent bacteria/other nasty stuff from getting all up in there if you know what I mean. At least that's how it was explained to me. But of course it's different for every person and I'm sure doctors have different opinions. I personally though have never had a bad vaginal infection

Thanks for the replies so far ladies! Sounds like different doctors give different advice, but that it depends on the person, family history and type of pill (and how long on the pill). I think once the time comes I'll ask my doctor - in fact I have a physical coming up in July so I think I'll do it then and see what she says. I think I'd rather be safe and go off the pill a few months before TTC, but it sounds like if there's an "oops" that it should be okay.

I just find all this TTC/baby stuff so overwhelming! I guess I was the same way with wedding stuff in the beginning too - just got to learn!

I've never been on the pill, but I thought I would mention my sister got pregnant right after stopping the pill, and it was nothing but complications. She ended up with a blood clot and her little girl was born prematurely, and lived for just under seven hours. The doctors believed it was due to the BC and that she didn't give herself a chance to have AF come. She doesn't even use birth control anymore. She now has a healthy baby boy, and another healthy baby on the way.

I know that's not going to be the case for everyone, or even a lot of people, but for me I wouldn't want to take any chances. I've been thinking about going on the pill (I really hate condoms) and if I do, I'd be more likely to wait a month or so at least after going off it before TTC.
