Costa Rica, Baby!

Hi everyone!

I've been dreaming of babies for... as long as I can remember. In my family is only acceptable to be married to have children soo my fiance and are engaged and the wedding is April 18. Then it's off to Costa Rica. My fiance already said once we get to Costa Rica- ttc is fair game :)

I want to be healthy and everything. I'm on yaz right now but I'm willing to just stop taking birth control and abstain alltogether for however many months necessary, 1-3-5 (ok, maybe that's pushing it!) I'm wondering when you start taking prenatal vitamins? I take quite a few vitamins now- a multivitamin, NAC, Omega 3-6-9. Would I switch these out for prenatals?

I'm also bipolar, but I've been working on getting down to as little medicine as possible already. All I have left is a little topamax and some klonopin, so I'm getting there.

I figure start exercising and eating healthy. Am I missing anything?

I can't wait! I know it's a year away but I just am so excited already. What's more exciting? The wedding? The honeymoon? I don't know!

Welcome to the board! I don't think I've seen you post before. You'll get a more proper reception if you post up in the "Intros" section up top.

Congratulations on your wedding and Costa Rica! As for prenatals, I'd suggest just adding a supplement of folic acid (400mcg more) to what you're already taking. Prenatals are pretty much just a multivitamin with extra folic acid. And it's worth starting that ASAP, as studies show that it's better the longer you take it before TTC, as much as a year before.

I wrote a long post last night, "Lorien's intro to TTC" or something, so I'll just put a link to that here if you're interested: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-pswaiting&msg=17564.6

I'd also recommend the TTCYFC (trying to conceive your first child) board (and the TTC board too), I've seen some discussion of bipolar medication over there. I assume you're talking to your doctor about your meds and TTC. Pregnancy can be really screwy on your emotions, so I know sometimes people (with their doctors) decide that benefits of being on some meds outweigh the risks. Good luck figuring it out!

So, I assume the wedding is April 2009? Good luck planning!

Welcome! Congrats on the wedding next year and I'm sure you'll have a blast in Costa Rica. As for coming off BC, my gyn told me to stop 3 months before TTC and start taking a prenatal then. But everyone's experience is different. I've heard from other sources that you should start taking folic acid up to a year before conceiving, but the good news is that a general woman's multivitamin probably has folic acid. You should check yours and if so should be good with that for a while. You might want to take an additional folic acid vitamin plus what you're already taking. I had trouble finding just a folic acid vitamin, so I switched my multivitamin for a generic PNV at Target. If you compare the ingredients, you can see there's only a few differences.

There is a group in the buddy section on losing weight, so post there to set exercise and eating goals.

Hi and welcome - congrats on your upcoming wedding and deciding on a TTC date!

Like Lorien said - if you'd like to post in the intro section of the board, I think you'll get more responses; that's where new members post to introduce themselves and share their story. See you around the board!
