A good suggestion I got when I went of the pill was to try out a few different brands of condoms and find some that work best for you and your DH. There are thinner ones out there, and they don't feel nearly as bad. It could be a fun experiment too!

I know that it's not as good with a condom, but hey, there's less clean up! LOL Plus, as you start charting, you can pick more and more days that are "whoops-free" and don't have to use them.

I actually solely used withdrawal as a BC method for years.

I've been off the pill now for about 2 months, not by choice though. I'm having some medical problems in which I can't have any hormones in my body.

We, right now, are forced to use condoms. We both HATE them. I feel like I'm married why should I have to use a condom, ARGH! Although we can't really afford another baby right now so we have to. In the heat of the moment it's hard to stop and say ok we have to use one but if it's something that in the back of your head, one of you, probably you, will stop and say ok we have to use a condom. Good luck!

If you want to know what happens when your DH promises to use condoms, take a look at my siggy, lol. Seriously, when we conceived our son we were supposed to be on a break from TTC because of my school schedule, and DH promised faithfully that he would use condoms and then...in the heat of the moment...well, they're just not sexy, are they?

My two cents: Make sure you actually will use condoms or don't go off the pill till you're ready to TTC. Most women don't get pregnant right away when they go off the pill, but all you need to do is take a "walk" over to TTCYFC to see that there are some who do and if that's really going to screw things up for you, you should probably wait to go off the pill. On the other hand, if a happy accident would be just that, feel free to toss the pills!

Good luck with your decision and the TTC process!

If you have already read (or at least had it recommended a million times) you should read TCOYF. It addresses this question well. Condoms at 98% effective with perfect usage. Moreover, it turns out the numbers for "normal usage" include when couples in the studies decide to deliberately get pregnant, not to mention people who just don't always use them, don't use them the whole time, etc. so perfect usage isn't actually that difficult. You can also get the Plan B pill over-the-counter now, and have that around to take in case a condom breaks. I'm sure you'll be fine for a few months. As long as you use them ;-)

Before I went on BC, DH and I used condoms exclusively and never had a problem.

Ruby - just wanted to let you know that you can get thermometers pretty much anywhere that has both Fahrenheit and Celsius on them. I bought one at Superstore for $10. They might not be BBT, but it works just as well and the temperature shifts are very clear for me :)

Also, if you can only find a Celsius one, then you can just use a celsius chart on FF or use Google to convert the temperature :)

Thanks Alyssa! Yeah I've seen tons of thermometers but only ONE BBT at Shoppers Drug Mart and it was Celsius!

We are sort of in this same predicament right now. We got pregnant with DS while I was faithfully on the pill, so now that I'm on the mini-pill (less effective) because of nursing, we try to double-up with condoms just in case hormonal BC fails us again.

Wellllll......we are discovering that we stink at using condoms. Out of the last five times we have BD, only once have we demonstrated what I would consider "perfect" or ideal usage, I.E. DH wears one from the beginning of sex and then pulls out immediately after orgasm and takes off the condom. Once (Sat night, day 11 of my cycle, yikes) things got heated and we didn't use a condom at all. And then the other three times we did various things that I know made the condom MUCH less effective.

Unfortunately, the only other thing I want to use is insertable spermicide gel, but it makes me sooooooo itchy for about 24 hours after sex, and actually once it gave me a yeast infection.

So who the heck knows what we're going to do when I go off BC and we have 5 months between then and TTC!!

Have you considered a diaphragm?
