How early to start taking prenatal vitamins? I was thinking about starting now. I'd love some extra energy and the folic acid couldn't hurt either.

Just curious.

Sam

Ps - I think we've comprimised as May 04 for a TTC date.

It's probably never too early. I have been taking a woman's daily vitamin for about 3 years, so I just continued with that, and my DR had put me on folic acid about 13 months before we TTC. I just informed him that we were thinking of trying in the next year or so, and he gave me a prescription for it. I went to a pre-pregnancy appt and he said what I was currently taking would work fine until I was pg. (One a day woman's formula and the folic acid)

Well,

DH and I are thinking about Jan 04 for TTC. So, I have started taking prenatal vitamins today that I bought from CVS.

My obgyn suggested taking prenatals a few months before you stop BCP.

I have been taking Centrum all along so it was not a big deal for me. the prenatal vitamins are pretty comparable to Centrum except for folic acid and maybe iron.

Some people get sick from prenatal vitamins but so far so good for me.

You are advised to take it at least 3 months before you TTC. However, I have known a really good friend of mine who has had 3 normal kids without taking prenatals. She can't take prenatal vitamins because it makes her throw up. And, she also got pregnant on the pill with one of them!

I think we are all anxious about doing the right things for the potential child and to ensure everything goes fine. As long as you are not doing anything "bad" to your body (like caffeine, smoking or drinking), you should be fine. I think our bodies were created to withstand a lot more than we could ever imagine! In fact, I know of another friend of mine who had half a can of mountain dew before she went to the doctor so that the baby would be active and they could determine the sex of the child!!!

PEople have done stranger things. :)

Good luck.

You should start a minumum of three months before TTC (or more specifically, before becoming pregnant) and I see no reason not to start now, mainly b/c doctors suggest that all women of childbearing age and ability should take a daily folic acid supplement.

I think doctors recommend that everyone take daily multivitamins whether they're planning to TTC or not, just for maintaining general good health. I've heard that all women of childbearing age should get a daily dose of at least 400mcg folic acid in case an unexpected pregnancy occurs. Otherwise, I've heard that you should take folic acid for at least one month before conception and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Personally, I've been taking different types of vitamins for the past 3 years. Earlier this year I was taking a vitamin B complex which contained 400mcg folic acid, as well as vitamin D (I'm prone to vit.D deficiency) and iron. Those all ran out, so yesterday I went to the pharmacy and got some more vitamin D as well as Centrum multivitamins which I've never tried before. Centrum only contains 200mcg folic acid which technically isn't enough, so I'll probably start taking folic acid supplements as well as the Centrum about 3 months before I start TTC. When I actually start TTC, I'll probably switch from the Centrum to pre-natal vitamins. I don't think there's any *right* way of doing it, and some people argue that prenatal vitamins aren't even necessary unless you've got a bad diet. However, I've heard that folic acid is always strongly recommended. HTH!

Hi there!

I am not sure which centrum multivitamins there are out there. However, the one I take has 400 mcg of folic acid. It is the new improved formula. If you can find that, it wouldn't be so bad!
