Is any one taking prenatal vitamins??

I just read the other day that you should begin taking prenatal vitamins 3 months before trying to conceive. I'm already starting late (lol). I bought some OTC prenatal vitamins yesterday and began taking them. Does anyone have any other suggestions of things I can start doing now to make myself as fertile as possible and as healthy to have a baby as possible. Is there something about green tea, and maybe zinc for DH? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there! I think it was "The Raptor" who mentioned that taking zinc can improve a man's sperm quality. Vitamin C is also good for sperm quality. Maybe multivitamins designed specifically for men would be a good idea for your dh? I have also heard that caffeine can increase sperm motility, so tell him to drink a cup of coffee or two! For women, however, caffeine can actually decrease fertility so stear clear of it yourself! Also, for women, taking B vitamins (especially vitamin B6 and B12, I think) can help them become pregnant more quickly. It is also good for lenghtening cycles if you think that might be a problem. And, if you know the day that you ovulate, I've heard that taking cough syrup (only for a day or two before you ovulate, otherwise overusing it can be bad for you, like with any medicine) thins the mucous near your cervix, making it easier for sperm to swim through to reach the egg. Something else to keep in mind when it's time to TTC! HTH.

I'm not taking prenatals, instead I am taking my regular women's formula multi (has 400 mcg folic acid) in the morning and I take a 400mcg folic acid pill at of 800mcg, which is similar to prenatals (usually 800mcg to 1mg).

This is what I did last time, and glad I started taking it early...Daniel was a total surprise. That said, I just started doing this last week, and we are hoping to start trying in a month, so won't have quite the buildup I had last time.

My dh isn't taking anything.

Hi there! I have been taking OTC prenatals for about 2 months and we are now ttc#1. It is a good idea. If you don't take actual prenatals it's ok, as long as you have at least 400 of folic acid. Green tea increases the amount of cervical mucus. It's good to take around ovulation time as well as a cough syrup that has the active ingredient as Guaifenesin. Cough syrup improves the quality of the cervical mucus. Just make sure you don't get a cough syrup that is a decongestant or it'll dry you up! Eat a healthy diet starting now. For men with low sperm counts, there are some vitamins that he can take that MAY help and zinc is one of them. The man should also be wearing boxers instead of briefs. This website will tell you a lot too.

I have been taking a daily multi-vitamin that contains 400 mcg of folic acid for about 6 months. My doctor recommened that I take Centrum Daily Vitamin for Women when I told him I would be TTC in a few months. I'm just taking a generic daily vitamin but he said as long as it had 400 mcg of folic acid that would be fine.

Hi, we're starting to try in a week and I started taking Women's Centrum 2 months ago. I started taking prenatals, but it's just easier to get the regular stuff as long as it has the 400mg of folic. My DH has started taking zink and wearing boxers. We have no idea the quality of his sperm, but these are suppose to be good for him/them ;) so we'll try it. You never know! I agree with Laney, just start eating healthy, so it's already set when you do become pregnant. It never hurts now anyway! I'm working on that part.

I've been taking a prenatal vitamin prescribed by my doctor since Feb. My regular dr. said I could just take the over the counter ones but my OB/GYN wanted me on the prescription one since it is formulated better and they know for sure I'm taking the right amounts. What's also interesting is that it contains the omega 3 fatty acids that they are saying is so important to health now.

My dh has always worn boxers but he CANNOT swallow pills! He does have to take a HBP pill which is tiny but he has trouble w/that, so I don't think he will be taking big vitamin pills! I'm a little concerned about the hbp pills affecting fertility but our dr doesn't think it should be a problem. I just want him to start exercising more and eating better, i.e. more fruits and veggies, and hopefully get off the meds soon. He's only 26!!!
