This was the coolest! I always knew about baby signing....and have played with the thought of wanting to do it, but have never known anyone who has done it to get their advice. We visited with my DH's boss and his wife Saturday, who taught their 16 month old some baby signs. It was so cool. He came up to me and started shaking his hands and I asked what he was trying to say. He was telling me that his ball was "all gone" he had thrown it down the stairs! It was awesome and now I'm so gung ho about doing it! My DH was also pretty excited about it, and really wants to do it (a nice little baby step there to see him get excited about something!!!!) Anyone teach their child(ren) to do this or know someone who has? I thought it was awesome!

Yes, baby signing seems to be the trendy thing nowadays for parents of babies and toddlers. I've heard of babies as young as six months learning to use signs to communicate, instead of just crying. It is supposed to be good for pre-verbal babies and for children with speech problems. My daughter has a mild speech delay and people were always telling me that I should use signing. However, I was kind of sceptical about using signing because I thought that I'd rather put my energy into teaching her to SAY words rather than teaching her to sign them. She goes to a speech therapy playgroup and the speech therapist there said that DD's main problem seems to be comprehension. She can't really understand what you're saying unless you use gestures or there are contextual clues. So she told me that I should start using signs when I talk so that she can understand what I'm saying better. So I've been using them, and I'm going to learn more of them, and her ability to understand and use langauge has already improved a lot. She even copies some of the signs I do, even though the idea was only for ME to use them so that she could understand what I was saying. lol. There are books you can buy about baby signing. Good luck and I hope it works really well, when the time comes!

After you mentioned baby signing the other day I started looking around and found a web site which has over 1000 signs on it. There is a feature where it shows a person doing the signs. I have taken a little sign language when I was younger, but it was always written from a book. I have to see it to understand so this site is really helpful. I've been practicing what I'm learning by using it at home with my husband. The site is http://www.masterstech-home.com/ASLDict.html. I hope this helps.

Take the "." off the end of the html and it will work. I had trouble with it too before I realized there was a period stuck on the end. Leave it to the "period" to cause problems--ha ha.
