Married 2 yrs, not trying, going off BC!

Hey all.. I'm no newbie to iVillage.. (but certainly this board) but now that I have been married two years, and babies are not going to be *too* soon, I thought I would stop by here.

I have been on BC since I was 18. I am almost 27 now and about 6 months ago I switched from Yaz to a generic Microgestin FE because Yaz was expensive as crap here and my gyno suggested the FE. Recently even my husband noticed I have been breaking around on my neck and shoulders worse than acne I even had back when I was 15. It was bad.. So I tried Proactiv. Well I got a horrible itchy reaction to the Peroxide medication in it so I have just been using other methods, which have helped some, but the shoulder breakouts are back.. IN SUMMER.. when I want to be wearing pretty dresses and tanks. Also, I had lost about 15 lbs while working out last year. In the last 4 months I have done the best at working out ever, doing a routine 5 days a week and I FEEL amazing... But yet my jeans are starting to feel tighter every day and I am still bloated and just feel FAT. Well last night I did some research on my BC and read hundreds of reviews saying it made people break out all over in acne and almost some gained up to 20 lbs.

After a long talk with my husband we decided that I should stop taking the BC. I am honestly terrified. I havent been off it since I was 18 and even then I started it because I was having a period every 3 weeks instead of 4 and horrible cramps. But we are both sick and tired of everything I am on either makes me have horrible mood swings, or now the weight gain and breakouts. So today is day #1 no BC.

Any other experiences out there like this? We don't want to start trying for a couple more years (we are just young, not really in a hurry) but tired of depending on this chemical that is BC...

Thanks All!

Hi Clair! Welcome to the board!

I'm Victoria, 29, and DH and I are WTT our first! Sorry to hear about all the BC side effects, hugs! Is there any other form of BC you could try meanwhile?

*Thank you Katie (hubbswifey) for my siggie!*

Hi Clair,

Welcome to the board.I'm Shannon(26), DH is Jeff(27), and we have a 13 month old son. We are WTT for #2. I am not sure if I have any advice as far as the bc goes. I had been on Alesse since I was about 17 and I loved it. What about a different type of bc? (IUD, Depo, the patch)I don't have a lot of info so I am not sure.

But before I ramble welcome! Do you have any idea as to when you and DH are thinking about kids? We are thinking Jan 2012 for the next one at the moment, but I am pushing for Jan of 2011. (DH wants a winter baby.)

Look forward to chatting with you.
Shannon

Welcome to the board, Clair! Wow -- it sucks that you've gone through so much just switching birth controls, but I don't have any doubt that it's been a huge hassle for you.

I went off BC for a year last year, and it was truly awesome! I'd been having trouble losing weight -- I'd started working out and eating healthier, but the weight wasn't going anywhere. I read online about some types of hormonal BC causing many women to not only gain weight but sustain the weight despite efforts to lose. I also read that some BC is related to migraine headaches, and I'd been having awful headaches about once every four to six weeks for the past two years or so.

Just to experiment, I went off the BC. I lost 8 pounds in less than three weeks (the most I'd lost in a month after several months of trying to eat less and working out while on the pill -- I think BC makes my appetite way more than it normally is when I'm not using it). After two months, I stopped having the regular migraines. The only downside for my being off BC is that I started to get breakouts the week before my period -- BC definitely helps to keep my skin clear, so that was the one thing I really missed. Oh, I also forgot that a big downside for me was having regular periods again -- I'd been deliberately skipping them quite a bit while on BC.

I started back on BC (the ring) three months ago, but then decided to go back off it for this last month before the wedding. DF says I should just go off it forever, but I'm adamant that we have to wait until we've been married at least a year before trying for our first. So I'll be going on BC starting two weeks before the wedding, and will be on it until late spring next year -- we'll be trying for our first in the summer. Not looking forward to weight gain and headaches, but I don't mind clear skin, and I definitely don't mind not having to freak out that we might have an 'oops' baby before the summer. (DF would not be devestated -- he is ready to try yesterday lol!) BUT -- after the first, I'm planning to get a non-hormonal IUD. I'm so ready to be done with hormonal birth control, but I'm not quite ready to use the fertility awareness method for birth control right after the wedding. I may leave it as an option after our first though (although an IUD would be first choice) -- I may get good at temping, etc. if we have to use it to TTC next year.

Speaking of fertility awareness, not sure if you've read Tony Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," but you may want to look into it. Besides women who use it for TTC, there are tons of women who use it successfully for birth control as well.

Anyway, sorry this got so long! Welcome to the board! I'm Jay, 26, and soon to be married to DF, 27. We've been together for nearly seven years, and will be trying for our first next summer. Looking forward to seeing you around the board!

Good luck! I went off BCP two years before TTC and don't want to ever go back. I'll second the recommendation for reading TCOYF. You just need to read the first couple of chapters, and after that it's all really the same stuff repeated for different situations. I loved going off birth control and discovering how my body naturally worked. And it put us in a great position to switch to TTC when we were ready.

I hope it goes well for you.

Cheers,

Throughout the whole time I have been on the pill, I have heard so many horror stories of the other methods that I am honestly scared. The ONLY one that seemed to do the best without all these side effects was when I was on Yasmin, which is expensive here as well. I think I am so willing to just go off of it because I had always said I would plan to try to see what my body would do by Jan. 2011 and since that is only 6 months away, we figured why not just get off of it now. I am 3 days out and am having some bleeding because I am sure my body "thinks" since the active pills stopped, I was supposed to start. We will see how long it lasts! Thanks for the welcome!

Hi Shannon! Thanks for the welcome.

As of right now, I honestly have no clue. I wish that I did. I wish there was a time we could try to shoot for but DH honestly does not want to put a time on it. I blame it on him being 25. I think he would be happy with having kids in his 30's. Well, he married a woman a year older than him that doesnt want to wait til she is in her 30's soooo... we will probably be compromising and trying to do it just sometime before 29. Wishful thinking on my end! lol

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. I am really hopeful that the breakouts and weight gain are from this BC so now that I am off of it I can start to see an improvement in both. I already feel less bloated.

I am 3 days out right now and started bleeding lightly this morning. I am sure it is my body telling itself it should since I usually start about 3 days after I am off my active pills. We will see how long it goes. So far no cramps, thankfully!

I bought the book you suggested yesterday on the suggestion of my friend that has been off of BC since 2006 because of her own bad side effects. She just got pregnant but said the book helped her through the years she was not TTC as well. I am excited about the prospect of what it will be like not to depend on the chemicals that I've had in my body for 9 years!

Congrats on the upcoming nuptials!

Hi Clair,

I was on BC pills for several years straight before I went off them at the end of 2008 to prepare for TTC. I never really had any adverse side-effects but I don't like the ideas of hormones/chemicals in my body.

I used FAM and the TCOYF book (awesome!!) for 5 cycles before we decided to NPP and we got PG on the first try! I am now on the mini-pill and I cannot wait to go back to using FAM. If it were me, I would ditch the pills now but DH is terrified of having an oops right now and I'm BFing so I haven't got AF yet and could still get PG. My employer does not pay for BC so I have to pay $33/mo. OOP. I'm planning at the end of this year to tell DH that I want to go back to using FAM next year because I want the BCPs out of me for awhile before we TTC #2. By that point, we should be more financially stable for an oops.

I loved learning about my cycles and being able to see by my temps that I was PG before I even took a HPT! I would highly recommend the TCOYF book. I bought an old copy off of Amazon.

GL and KUP!
