Hello everyone! I had posted an introduction on this board a while back but never really came back as a regular poster. I figured now might be the time to re-introduce.

My name is Erin, and my fiance is John and we are getting married on May 22. We recently bought a fixer-upper house, and we are both struggling to get settled into our careers. He has a decent job but is anxiously waiting a transfer into a federal position that has been promised to him, and I'm a substitute teacher (5 years now) in an area that is inundated with teacher applicants and few jobs. We don't want to move because he has a good job now, and we purchased our house, so I'm stuck waiting in a very inconsistent income schedule. I also work part time at a local couples resort to help make ends meet.

We both agree that we want children in the future, but we recognize that our financial situation isn't stable enough yet for it. We want to get our house fixed up a bit first, take a few nice vacations, and just generally feel READY for the next step. I think we aren't quite mature enough yet...a bit too selfish. :-) Plus I think I need to be settled into a full time job for at least a year or two before I could take a maternity leave without making administration upset with me. Does anyone know anything about rules regarding teachers taking maternity leave? I always figured that to really be "safe" I should wait until past the 3 year mark so that I have tenure...but at the rate I'm going, that'll put me past 30 years old before we even begin to try, and I'm not satisfied with that.

I hope to get a full time job for next year, and while it's hard to know exactly when we will be ready, I'm hoping to start TTC our first in a few years.

Although I realize that I'm not ready, it doesn't stop the occasional baby twinges...which is why I'm here. :-)

Hi Erin! I'm Brita, and I'm currently WTT for #2 after 'graduating' from WTT in July '08 and having a baby this past May!

I did the whole substitute teacher thing for a 1.5 years when I moved to the Florida Keys with my husband, and it is tough. You are going to be well prepared for the classroom when you get hired as a teacher :)

Maternity leave procedures are different for teachers in every state and in every district. But as long as you are not in a tiny, private school you should be covered by the FMLA once you have been there a year.

In NC you get leave following the birth of a child for 6 or 8 weeks depending on the type of birth no matter how long you have been working. Also, you can take 'parental leave' following the birth or adoption of a child for up to one year but I think you have to have tenure to do this (at the very least a continuing contract which I didn't have when Barrett was born). I also taught in a school district in Illinois that gave a three year, unpaid maternity leave to teachers with tenure!

The majority of teachers are women so I think schools tend to be very understanding of women taking maternity leave. I can't imagine a school not hiring an untenured teacher back for the next year simply because she had a baby in the middle of the year.

Good luck getting a full time job for next year. I look forward to getting to know you better and hearing about your wedding and WTT journey!

Hi Erin, welcome to the board! How is wedding planning going? What kind of wedding are you having?

I forget if I introduced myself when you were here before, but I hope you stick around this time! My name's Becki, I'm 24, and my husband Paul is 26. We've been married two years and are waiting to try for our first in the next year or so - we don't have a date picked out at the moment. Like you guys, my husband likes the idea of kids but is not feeling ready yet, and he doesn't know exactly when he will be, so I'm just waiting! Hopefully this fall though, but maybe early next year.

Proud CL of Waiting to Try - Thanks for my sig Katie!
