What a day!

My dog decided to snatch a baby rabbit this morning from my iris bed. I took her out and she was doing her business and the next thing I knew she'd jumped into my flowers, almost pulling me off the porch. She came prancing around the corner of the steps with this poor rabbit in her mouth and a gleam in her eye and had every intention of taking it into MY house.

My DH and I finally got her jaws opened wide enough that I could get the bunny loose and he moved it back to the flower bed in case its momma came back. It was sitting upright and breathing (hard) for about 15 minutes, but I think the poor thing died before I left this morning. I wanted to take the bunny to the vet but my DH said he would probably not be able to help it even if it lived long enough to get it there. I'm sure my dog probably gave it some pretty harsh internal injuries. My DH managed to cut his thumb on the dog's teeth when he was prying her jaws open. Now she's all proud of herself and prances around like she's a warrior princess or something. And I think I have a dead baby bunny beside my flowers. And we both ended up late for work.

Is it Friday yet?

There's something about dogs and rabbits. One of my dogs days (a yorkie, so barely bigger than a rabbit) has killed 7 baby rabbits in his lifetime. My dad gives him a notch in his collar everytime he does. I think it's sad :(

I agree--I think it's sad too.

Poor bunny! I'm picturing this huge growling snarling dog and a tiny fluffy bunny, helpless and wide eyed w/ fear. Too Disney, right? Poor little fellow! Sounds like your dog has a taste for the hunt, though!

I'm so sorry! I know how you feel. We found an injured baby bird under our car port. We scooped it up onto a box lid and I tried to feed it some bread crumbs but poor thing was just too weak. Then we put it in the grass, and I wanted to take it to the vet but my dh didn't think it'd live that long! The next day he was gone, I don't know what happened to him. I feel sorry for these helpless creatures when they get hurt and we can't do anything about them. =(
