Hello,

This is my first time posting in the pregnancy section of the board here. I was just wandering if any of the ladies here that are waiting to try, ever considered themselves child-free for now? I mean I have come across a definition once, I think on dictionary.com

No, I've never considered that.

Hi there,

I guess I would say yes and no (really no with a hint of yes.) I have ALWAYS known that I would want to have children, but I also knew that career would be important to me too. I went for my Bachelor's straight out of high school, and at that time having a baby was still part of "distant future" plans. I was lucky enough to meet DH while studying for my Bachelor's, and we got engaged a year after I finished. So, because I was so lucky, I never really considered what life might be like if I didn't find a life partner to raise children with. (Although, come to think of it, I think I knew I would want to raise a child, even if it meant adopting or IVF as a single mom!)

However, one of the reasons that DH and I decided to wait, other than my career, was to enjoy some of the benefits of being together without kids in tow - traveling, making last minute plans on weeknights, sleeping in, and just creating the right conditions to build a family. So I guess we were conscious of wanting to be child-free for a period...(all the while doting on friends' kids as much as possible;).

May I ask - why is the definition of being child free important to you? (And, unless you took a big break between hs and college, I have to say that I'm kind of surprised that your former teacher was surprised you didn't have children yet!)

I have never used child-free to define myself. I have always known that children were in my future. Now I did meet my DH at a very young age, but I don't know that even if I were single now instead of married that it

Yeah, I am aware of the "childfree" label, but I wouldn't consider myself to be in this category. My BFF and her SO are definitely "childfree"--they don't plan on ever having children, by choice, to the point that he has considered a vasectomy. I have always considered me and DH more like: "Married w/out kids", and that soon we will be "married with kids". Heheh

I also consider myself married without kids but only until we're financially able to have children, so I do not consider myself child-free.

I do agree about the terms not really being used too much off the boards. I mean sure there are some CFBC groups like the no-kidding and stuff like that, but I have never really heard too many people use the term save for two friends once. And I know for sure they definitely don't want any kids of their own down the road or

Nope, definitely WTC...to me child-free denotes a conscious decision to not have kids at all.
