In your opinion, Is there a certain WEIGHT to start trying??

Me and my husband were waiting to ttc until after he graduated from his Master's program and got a job........well, he graduates at the end of April and already has a job lined up! (yay!) I always said, "I'll start trying when I lose X amount of pounds" but now I'm not so sure. I went to the doctor and he said I need to lose around 60 pounds (I'm 5' 8" and 247 right now, he wants me to get down to 190---I have a large frame and a higher testosterone level that most women which causes me to have more muscle mass than most women, so I don't actually LOOK the amount I weigh---) Anyways, I would love to start trying at the end of summer, probably around mid-late August and I am currently on the Weight Watchers program and doing great, but I wonder, "What if I don't reach that 190 goal, and I just going to keep waiting and waiting and waiting?".....How do you make a decision like that? I mean, I know they say "overweight women have increased risk for blah, blah ,blah and blah", but I mean, IMO, I think that increased risk is from women who are eating unhealthy from being overweight and women who continue to eat unhealthy throughout their pregnancy.......and of course, no matter what weight you are, there are risks with having a pregnancy. I just don't know how to make the decision on deciding when to try.........What do ya'll think?

Thank you so much, we are very excited! I too have always been on the 'heavy side', and just like you, my heaviest was my sophomore year of high school, I was 269, the thinnest I have been in my adult life has been 190 (size 10/12) in Fall of 2008 (and boy did I feel great, I felt gorgeous!), however I have slowly put 57 pounds (now 247 pound---size 16/18) on since then. I have no other health problems whatsoever. I actually do basal body temperature charting 'just for the fun of it', I told my doctor about doing the BBT charting and he laughed at me because my reason for doing so is "just because I like to know when I ovulate and when my period is going to start". haha. I ovulate every month, anywhere from Day 15-19, luteal phase almost exactly 2 weeks after that, so my cycles are pretty regular for a 'big girl'. lol. The decision on whether or not to TTC is not on a weight "I feel comfortable with", it's with a weight that is healthy for me and the baby, I just don't know what that is! I mean, I'm 247 and I feel pretty healthy right now. I am now on Weight Watchers program and I eat lean proteins, lots of fruits and veggies, etc. I just have this feeling in the back of my mind, "What if I got pregnant at X lbs and I got X complication and I may not have gotten X complication if I was X lbs thinner", ya know?

I'm doing weight watchers to! It helped me drop all of my baby weight by 9 months. Needless to say I have been holding steady for the last 4 months. As for AF, I have had perfect cycles every month except two, one that it never showed and the one I got prego in all the years since I started. My weight now is less then what I weighed when I was playing college basketball my freshman year.

That is almost exactly what my husband said to me last night while we were having this exact same conversation with each other.......because I want to start TTC #1 on my my 23rd birthday (August 18th) and he basically said, "Do the best you can until August, if you feel like like you've lost enough and it's the right time then we'll try, if you want to lose more, then we'll wait, that's fine."

Oh, and a side note, with this new "pro-points" plan, do you always use your weekly 49, partial, or do you not use them at all? I have been conflicted with using them.......

Congrats on your hubby graduating and landing a job!

There is probably an increased PG health risk for overweight women but being overweight is not a guarantee that you will have issues either as thin women can get them too.

I think you've gotten great advice so far -- play it by ear and see how you feel in August.

I definitely do NOT think there is a number you must hit before you start TTC. As I said elsewhere on this board recently, everyone's body is different and every woman needs to find the weight that is comfortable for her. For your frame and activity level, you may do great better pregnant at 215 than I would at 190. You know what I mean? Only you can know what weight is comfortable for you.

And while I do think that being at a healthy weight is an important goal pre-pregnancy, I also think that the risks of weight-related complications are far from an exact science. You could be totally fine at 250 or have complications at 150. Just do your best and then trust your body!

My weight is one of the reasons we are waiting right now also. I'm at 215 and I would really love to be at 180 when we start TTC. But that's because I know I'm uncomfortable physically at this weight right now, and I really think 180 is where I'll be ready. But I'm also playing it by ear. If I get to 190 and feel great, we may go for it. And if I get to 180 and still don't feel ready, I'll give it another 10lbs and see how that feels. It's all relative.

Sometimes I use all sometimes I don't. It normally just depends on whats going on during the week. I normally use a few every day or if I know something is coming up I'll try and stick as close to the daily as I Can so I have those to use.

I weighed in at WW yesterday and lost 1.8 pounds this week, last week I lost 2 pounds, so I am averaging about 2 pounds a week, I'm just scared that rate won't keep up. The new Pro Points plans at WW is really working for me, I had been on WW several times in the past and couldn't stick to it, but this plan is so different, I love it! I don't feel deprived at all........I even got my husband on board with me as of yesterday (although he only needs to lose like 20 lbs). I do not want to be considered 'obese', I definitely don't think I look obese right now. I have had several doctors tell me I do in fact have 'big bones' after doing some measurements and assessments, so I am 245.6 lbs now, but only a size 16, when my friend is about the same weight and she is a size 22, I hate the BMI index, it is so outdated and inaccurate I think. lol. I guess we'll see........the more I talk about 'deadlines' and such, it is just too much pressure on me, I think I'm just going to do my best and quit worrying about it so much! lol. But I am a planner, and I want to say, I'm going to do this, this , and this by this date.........but I need to let that go because it's driving me crazy! haha
