Gdil and I disagree about something and I need outside opinions pls. When you have say a couch or a recliner chair that has dark legs like cherry wood, is it tacky to have end tables in a lighter shade of wood such as oak? I'm not going to tell y'all which side I'm on as I want honest answers.....not that I think any of you would lie but I don't want you to "side" w/me just cuz I'm one of ya's KWIM?

So answers pls......and thanks.

I always think everything should match but right now I have a antiques nickle end table & coffee table & the legs on my sofa & chair look to be cherry & the entertainment center if you can call it that is cherry. I grew up in a house where everything always matched so.... But I did mix & match my kitchen chairs when we lived in Maine because the ones that came w/the set 2 broke & I had other chair so I mixed them. I saw it done in a magazine & it worked out very well. Right now I have my Ethan Allen table, cherry top w/a green pedastle bottom, chairs all broke so since I'm not using my dining room table I'm using the chairs to it. Chairs btw cost more then a whole new set so I guess we'll be winging it for some time to come.

So I guess if it were me it would depend how much of the legs show. Short stubby or longer? If its not too noticable then I guess it might be ok. If it is then they have to match.

You and your GDIL are both right neither one is wrong. The trends of this age are to mix things up but there is something to remember with this. I'll try and give you some examples so you will see.

I am the one who doesn't think all the woods should match. Gdil insists that I should get dark end tables cuz a whole 4 1/2 inches of the couch's legs are dark cherry. Maybe 5". And people notice those things ya know! That's her defense.

The closer we get to the garage sale, the more stuff I've been adding to it. All the furniture we had was a mix of my mom's and mine and basically just junk IMO. So out went all the tables. What I kept was an old antique long table made of oak that I've had for a long time and w/not part w/it! It's got the look of bamboo but it's solid oak, the lighter shade. I think some people call them couch tables (for the back side, not a coffee table)Only I don't use mine that way; it's out in the open against a window w/framed pics on it. And I found some end tables online that I like. Whenever I show what I like to Gdil, she poo poos it cuz it's not dark. I told my sis about this and she said the same thing as what Fran said. Ignore her and do what you want!

So you all just solidified my quest. That young 20 yr old doesn't know jack about everything like she thinks she does!
