Thinking of putting DS1 into hockey.

I'm thinking of starting DS1 in the minor hockey league this year.  But, I don't want to overload him.  It looks like they practice three times a week, in the afternoons or evenings (not the mornings yet, thank Heaven!).  If I register him for hockey, I'll pull him out of swimming until spring break.  I think he'd like to play hockey more, but I'll ask him before we register.  Do you think three practices a week is too much for a 6-year-old?  Swimming is twice a week, and skating lessons would be twice a week as well, if I were to choose those instead.  What do you think?  How old were your kids when you started them in minor sports?

I feel 6 is too young to start regular league play. That is just my opinion. Kids can't really grasp plays, passes, etc.... Now basics of skating, hockey skills and drills, excellent! By 8, they can get plays, positions, etc... Individual sports, swim, martial arts, skating...those are better suited to that age. I know people do start kids early. I feel it just burns them out. Also, kids should try everything at that age, who knows what their passions might be? My kids played tons of sports. Now ds is in marching band and football. Hockey starts in November and spring is lacrosse.

Thanks! I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to kids' sports. It makes sense that they wouldn't really grasp the 'team play' concepts.

But sign him up for a skills class, a skate class, etc...  Also, any individual sport is great at that age, swim, skate, martial arts....  Gymnastics is great because it teaches balance and how to fall with out getting hurt.

He's in swimming now, and I'll sign him up for skating for the second winter set. Then maybe hockey skills in the spring. The league will teach the kids to skate (he already has some skills) but rec hockey wants the kids to be able to skate already.
