Our oldest is only 12 so we don't have teenager costs yet and we homeschool so our kids don't feel the pressure of not having the "right" clothes or shoes, so I don't have much experience there yet.
It is a tough decision. Like you, I feel that the kids will work the rest of their lives. So now they should play, learn about activities that interest them, etc. But at the same time money isn't unlimited. What I started doing over the last few months, and you might be able to adapt for your own needs, is we gave up drinking things like juice, cold tea, etc. It saves us $35 a week. I take that $35 and put it in the "fun jar" and that money is what we use to do fun things: day trips, movies, go out for ice cream. Maybe you could do the same, but put a set amount in there for when she drives someone somewhere, babysits, does laundry?

Hugs,

Martie, wife to one fabulous man and mom to 8 amazing childrenHere's my plan for allowances (my oldest is 3, so feel free to take with a grain of salt):
They will get a certain amount of money because they are part of the family, probably dependent on age.
They will get a certain amount of money for doing their jobs.
