HS is going to be joining rugby after Christmas break, once things start up again, and it's gotten me to thinking what an appropriate age is to start into organised sports.

We started DS in soccer when he was 3. It was interesting. The kids had fun, but they really didn't understand the rules. He started with T-ball at 6 (which is when he asked to do it, we could have started him at 5), and that's gone really well. He's really excited for the third season to start this spring, and he was disappointed when fall ball got cancelled at the last minute.

I think if he's interested, then I'd probably sign him up without too much expectation.

I think like everything else it varies from person to person, family to family. We've done organized sports as early as 4 with different results. I would say if he is really wanting to try, if you or your dh can go to all the practices and games (so he isn't there w/o an adult) and you are willing to try it (knowing that if he wants to stop you should let him b/c at 4 "commitment" is different than it is at 8). If not, then have him wait and play rugby at home. I bet you could get some other kids to join in and it'd be fun. :)
