In some respects I am one of those people who needs to be dragged kicking and screaming to the next thing. I clung to a desktop for 15 years before I gave in an let my dh buy me a laptop. Cell phones seem, I don't know, not real to me. I am still psyched that they invented touch tone phones.

I am a lot like you.
The kids are with me most of the time or they are somewhere that I know the phone number so a cell phone is not really necessary right now. In the future we may reconsider but at this point I am not willing to get my daughter a phone just so she can fit in with the rest of her friends.
I agree that kids don't need cell phones all the time. We bought a prepaid one in the fall because my oldest was doing cross country and needed to be picked up at varying times. We keep the phone at home and just give it to the kids when I think they need it.
I do have unlimited texting but not unlimited minutes, so I prefer they text rather than call anyone. But I also use the cell phones as a carrot that I dangle when I need cooperation from the oldest 2. If they don't do what they are supposed to do, then I yank the phones. They also know that I can and will check their messages and anything on the phone.
And when I think they are spending way too much time on them, I have the power of Mom to make them put it up for a little while. :)
