Thinking of baby #6
Thu, 06-21-2012 - 5:12pm

Hi ladies, it's been a long while since I have checked in here, I am hoping someone can help. So DH and I have 5 kids right now, ages 10, 9, 7, 4, and 2. We are thinking about trying for #6 but our only problem is a car. Right now I drive a chevy trailblazer ext, 3rd row seating. It seats 7, so right now when DH is with us we are full. So I have been looking at other options for cars such as different vans ect. When we go on vacation (which isn't often lol) we drive as flying is WAY too much $$$. So something that seats 9 would be nice, a little extra space. However something that seats 8 is what is needed. I suppose when DH isn't with us I could put my son (who is the oldest) in the front passenger seat, but we need something that will fit us all. Any suggestions? What do you all drive?

Also, how are you bedroom situations? Right now my son (10yr) has his own room and then I have 4 girls, the oldest two share a room and the little two share. My oldest dd has been asking for her own room, which I would like to do but if we have another baby that may not be an option. I know she won't die if she has to continue sharing (although she acts like it sometimes lol) but I'm torn on what to do. The kids all like the idea of having another baby (except my son, he's worried it may be another girl :smileywink:

I never had so much trouble being so sure about having a baby...didn't think it would start at #6! Please help :smileyhappy:

We have a Sprinter.  It seats 12.  Remember that while these vehicles that claim to seat 7 or 8 really do legally seat that many, they COMPLETELY lack any sort of leg/shoulder room or growing room for the kids as they get bigger.  This is why we opted to order our Sprinter.  With kids 14, 12, 10, 4 and 1-yr twins (ages now, but we got the van this past Christmas) we had to consider breathing room.  Also, with all those kids crammed into a trail blazer, there is NO room for luggage or even a picnic basket!  :smileywink:  We went from a Grand Caravan with Stow n Go seating which I L.O.V.E.D. with all my heart.  But, the ease with which we get in and out of this huge thing is unbeatable.  The only thing it lacks is the auto sliding door.  I really miss that.

We have 3 vehicles: A sedan that fits 5, a 4WD jeep that fits 7, and a van that fits 12. What we take depends on who is going.

I have lots of friends who like the Honda Odyssey. I believe that fits 8. I am considering trading in the 12 passanger van for a suburban which fits 9. Mostly b/c we now live in the mountains and I am terrified of driving in the snow....especially in a Ford econo-van.

As for rooms, before we moved, we had 8 bedrooms: the 2 youngest girls shared a room, my dh and I sared a room, and the other 6 kids had their own rooms. Now that we moved, we are down to 6 bedrooms, but we'll be going back to 8 this fall when we do some remodling on the new house.

Personally, I don't think it is bad for kids to share rooms. I think it is good for them. For years, everyone shared in our family. But as the older kids grew, and we HS so we are around each other so much, we decided we needed more personal space. I shared a room with my mother from the time I was 12-18. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. lol

Good luck, Wendy!
