tips for managing Legos?

Hi Mamas -
This group is my best resource for tips! I have two DS that share a room and LOVE Legos - they get more every holiday and birthday....x2. They play with them tons and make all kinds of cool creations, but you all know how horrible it is to step on them. It's mess and potential pain all over the floor of their room - all the time. Drives me insane.

Do any of you have tips about how to manage legos? How to get them to pick them up (even when they are in-process and have been digging through the bins and have found just the right pieces...but then they get called down to dinner) ? They are limited to their bedroom at this point, but that's all I have going for me.

We keep them in a couple of plastic bins and they have to pick them up before they go anywhere. For dinner or going somewhere or something else, they usually get a 15 minute warning. If they're in the middle of playing they can leave out the assembled pieces but anything loose has to go back in the bin. I tell them if they put it on top they'll find it easily when they go back to it. So far so good!

We had a few time periods when they were just a mess, so we kept the bins in our room and they had to ask for them. Check them in and out like a library, LOL. Once they learned to be responsible with them again, we let them have them back.

we have millions and the sprawl and get a lot of play time. I have a general toy collection basket and legos included then when full we haul it upstairs for putbacks. for storage we used Blox4Blocks for a long time but seem to have out grown so now I switched to under the bed Container Store clear. It's flat, big (but not the super huge one) and holds alot and when they go to dig around in it everything is spread a bit vs. a tall container plus it fits under the bed. I think if i get one more i will just get rid of the blox4blocks we are so beyond even tho we have 2. oh, and they pick them up really quick as soon as i turn the vacuum on. lol

A subject near and dear to me as all 3 of my boys love legos and we get them for birthdays and Christmas every year! My boys actually prefer to keep the sets separate so when things are taken apart or partially built we usually put all the pieces and instructions in gallon ziploc bags, and have several large rubbermaid tubs to store everything in. We never save the boxes they came in, if we did we would all be living on our front lawn! :)

We do the same as Lisa, except when they're building they take a bunch of bowls up to their room so they can use them to hold the separate pieces they need. I love ziplock bags. I use them for puzzles, beads, game pieces. They're wonderful.

And Sher is right too. If you want a quick and thorough clean up, get the vacuum out. It motivates wonderfully. :)

OOOH! Thank you so much! Fantastic ideas! Re-organizing their Legos might be next weekend's project!

Many thanks!

My mom made a "lego bag" for my brother and I when we were kids.

We actually use a snow shovel to scoop them up because our 5 year old special needs daughter LOVES to hear the sound of them dumping out, and does it every chance she gets :o)

You could also have them spread out a blanket and work on that. Then they can just dump them back into the bucket.

Happy building :o)
