I was just reading through this feature where members answer the question "Were you forced to clean your plate?"

My mom would always ask that we take three bites of each food item on our plates, and that was good enough. My dad, on the other hand, wanted the plates cleaned and would often make us sit there for what felt like hours. Sometimes I was able to get the dog to eat it whatever the offensive food was. Other times, I could hide it in my napkin. Like the other members, I have bad memories of liver dinners. I have never made this for my family, and I don't think I know anyone else who has.

Our rule is that the kids have to try the food on their plate. I do the 3 bite rule, and I haven't had any backlash from the kids. So far, they've agreed to try anything.

Were you forced to clean your plate at meal times? Do you have your child clean his/her plate?

Yes I had to clean my plate as a child.

I don't remember if we had to clean our plates or not. I want to say yes because I remember times where I was the only one left at the table after everyone else had eaten and left.

We don't make Erin clean her plate. I give her very small portions of everything I make and we tell her she has to take 3 bites of each thing. Some things she really likes and will eat it all and ask for more and other things she can barely choke down the 3 bites. I very, very rarely let her eat something different from what we are eating. After she started eating "our" food, for a long time, I still made her a separate meal but I stopped that about a year or so ago because it was becoming too time-consuming.

We always did the three bite rule here as well.
