I used to post here a long time ago. I've been lurking again and thought I'd post. :) I'm Jen and my ds is Billy (11...12 in a month) He starts middle school on the 31st and is rather excited about it. Me...not so much. I'm having such a hard time letting go. I just can't believe my baby is going to be 12.

It's nice to find a community of people where I won't hear "you only have the one?" LOL. Ds's 6th grade class will be going on a 2 day overnight field trip two states away in October. Ds is not going. Mostly because he didn't want to go & dh & I really weren't comfortable with the whole idea. Plus, we didn't want to have to travel 4hrs. if we got a call in the middle of the night. ;) I've already heard from some other parents that we are being too overprotective. Ds also have Asperger's and severe anxiety.

Hi, Jen. I'm Sunni and my DD, Olivia, will be 5 next month. She misses the cutoff for school so she's staying my baby 1 more year. I am overprotective so I'm not sure I'll be ready to send her on a trip like like at 12. I got to have the wonderful just 1 conversation this past weekend.

Hi Jen! We have boys the same age! My son Travis is 11 and started middle school (6th grade) last week. Middle school sort of freaks me out, but Travis seems to be handling everything fine (I knew he would, he's not a worrier like me.)

Yikes, a two day overnight field trip two states away would definitely make me a nervous wreck!! I hope that situation doesn't present itself here! If Travis wanted to go I would probably let him, but I would definitely worry. If Billy doesn't want to go I certainly wouldn't push it.

I look forward to seeing you around the board and getting to know you. :-)

Hi Jen! Welcome back! I'm Sharon with ds Luke who is 6.

Wow! A two night trip two states away?! I'm not sure I would be comfortable with that, either. Good for you for following your gut and for listening to your ds when he said he didn't really want to go.

I wouldn't put too much thought into what those other parents have to say. It's your kid, your choice. I'm sure he'll have plenty of opportunities like that when he's older, and he's ready. I think sometimes people criticize our choices because they are so unsure about their own or because they lack the ability to see another's persepective. Having a shy, anxious kid myself, I hear the whole "you're being too protective" diatribe all the time.

Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to be back. I think that kind of field trip is a bit much too. I've talked to some parents who are actually forcing their kids to go. They think that the kids need to learn to be away from them and be on their own. I figure we've got plenty of time for that.

Again, thanks for the welcome. :)
