It's not officially summer solstice yet, how is your "late spring" break going so far?

Hi Jodi

We've got 2 more weeks of school left. Victoria has gone on a school trip today to a country park.

That sounds like lots of fun!!!

We haven't done much of anything really. We are going to Chicago on Saturday for the day. It takes us about 2 hours. We're going to see friends. There's an Ikea in Schamburg and I'm DEFINITELY stopping since it's on the way (mostly). I've never been to one and I need to start shopping for the basement bathroom vanity and the "closet" for the bedroom.

so far our summer break has been HOT. I think today's heat index is 100, not fun in my book at all. It gets to the point where it's too hot to enjoy the pool then you know it's hot.

Our summer break started off with a flood in our house. May 23 we had a huge storm roll through, 7.5 inches in less than 2 hours. There are no ditches or drainage around here and the ground is mostly rock so no place for it to absorb into, so we had a river going past the back side of our house and water came into 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Carpet and drywall had to be torn out, only 2 ft of drywall but you can imagine the mess. We finally moved all the stuff back into the rooms on June 10, now I have to organize and unpack everything. :( It's been chaos to say the least, all the stuff from the 2 bedrooms has been in our living room and kitchen. Total nightmare.

The sale is still going through for our businesses but there has been one major change, neither DH or I will have a job after July 1. They do not want my husband to be the store manager, they want to pay him a "consulting" fee to be available to help but they want him out. Understandable, new owners new policies and all that. The other change is they do not want to do diabetic shoes which means I'm out of a job. We were just beginning to tap into the shoes out here so our sales are not that high but the market is very good for them if they would give it another 6 months we'd be making some really good money. So now I'm having to put together my resume and get out there to find another company to work for. The people we buy our shoes from have 2 companies interested in me but it may mean traveling to Laredo or San Antonio. I hope I can convince them to hit up the nursing homes and skilled nursing out here also. They would most likely hire me as a contractor which means I'd be responsible for my own taxes, social security and all that other stuff, which means I'd be self employed and end up giving 1/2 of what I make in taxes. That would really suck but at least I'd be working.

Sorry that was long and not fun to read. I'm a bit stressed out right now after the flood in our house and now to find out after we depleted our savings that neither of us will have jobs in a couple of weeks, well I feel the need to double up on my antidepressants! lol

Paige is enjoying her summer. We have a new kitten that has ended up giving her some ringworm ;-) got to love adopting a stray cat and them not finding the ringworm while he was at the dr's under quarantine for 13 days! Let's hope none of my other animals get it too.

We're heading up to MI on the 28th of June to spend the 4th of July with family and friends. I'm looking forward to that but it will be sad since my Grandma passed away a week ago.

Darn I'm a real downer in this post. Sorry about that, lots has happened since I was on the board last!

If this is still spring, I hate to see how hot summer will get.

I'm so glad Victoria is continuing with the Girl Guides! How exciting! Paige will move up to Junior Girl Scouts after the 3rd grade, that's the next step after Brownies. I have to get leader training for that, there is a lot more involved for the girls and the leader starts to back off and have things more girl driven, it'll be nice to move to that step.

How long is Victoria's summer vacation? I wish the US schools would adopt a year round school schedule and have longer spring breaks :) To me it would make more sense to have 2 weeks at Christmas/New Years, 2 weeks in the Spring, 4 weeks over the summer and then all the other holidays. So many kids loose what they learned over the summer with almost 3 months off. I'm sure the teachers wouldn't like that but many of the working parents would!

The parade sounds neat. They LOVE parades here in the US. The whole reason I go home during the July 4th holiday is so I can see the parade, fireworks and all my family, it's a huge celebration time.

Yes, Girl Guides here definitely seems to be more of the girls working on their own.
