Anyone else following all of these news stories? Is it actually worse or are people finally paying attention? I'm already worried because Olivia is so timid. I know she's only 5 but she's always been the kid that gets pushed to the side or hurt. I worry that the same pattern will continue as she gets older.

Hi Sunni,

It's a pretty scary topic to me also.

Thankfully at the moment DD is pretty good at standing up for herself and hopefully

Paige and I have not had any conversations about the stuff on the news but we've been dealing with her own friendship problems constantly. She's so much like me, quick to speak her mind, and that often angers her "friends" There are some mean kids in her class and a couple have have no idea what it means to be a friend to someone. Paige also wears her emotions on her shirt sleeve so she gets hurt easily. I'm trying to talk to her about being honest but not hurtful honest and also how to deal with the mean kids that say hurtful things. I hope we can keep our lines of communication open through out school, I remember my school years and never want to repeat them, and definitely don't want Paige to experience the teasing and bullying I endured.

I hope that if I start talking about these things early then we'll always have that line of communication and she'll be able to handle whatever comes her way.

I was bullied by a girl for over a year. To this day, I don't know why she picked on me or why I tolerated it for so long. I stood up for all my friends but not for myself. The school was aware of the situation but did nothing. It ended in a physical fight when I'd finally reached my limit. I'm not proud of it and hope that Olivia never has to go that route.

I think people are just finally starting to pay attention. I remember the when I was a kid and some of the ways other kids would get picked on were pretty mean. Kids can be so ruthless sometimes! It seems like everyone's more aware of bullying and that it can have major consequences if no one puts an end to it. That's probably why we keep hearing so much about it on the news now.
