I just found this article from Time called The Only Child: Debunking the Myths, http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2002382,00.html. They've even got a pretty cool photo gallery of famous onlies.

What always gets me are the comments below the articles - the one saying they didn't take into account about onlies getting older with older parents. Well, my mom was 3rd of 5 and it was all up to her when her dad was ailing/aging; she had 2 brothers and an invalid sister at the time (older sister died in her early 40s); obviously her sister couldn't do much but her brothers didn't think to help.

Thanks for posting this, Jen. I posted about the article on Facebook, where most of us are. (Psst, if anyone here is on FB and isn't friends with the rest of us yet, let me know!)

I thought the article itself was pretty good. Full of all the things that we OC moms already know but are waiting for the rest of the world to figure out. ;-) The online comments were pretty aggravating, though. It's amazing how some people will read that article and then just completely dismiss it. I guess ultimately that's what I just sincerely do not get....why does there have to be something wrong with my choice just because you made a different choice??? I wonder if the negative perceptions will decrease if only child families become more commonplace.

Amy, I wonder how many people DON'T read the article and comment anyway.

That has certainly been the case in various branches of my family....the responsibilities (or bulk thereof) fall on one person even though they have siblings. I can think of 3 or 4 examples in my family off the top of my head, but hey judgmental people, you keep clinging to the belief that you're somehow preventing that by having more than one kid!

And yes, I'm aware that sometimes onlies do end up facing tough things "alone". What are you going to do?? There are tough things in life and we all face them one way or another. I still think the only good reason to have another child is because you truly want one; not because you think you'll somehow be warding off any future issues.

Ooo, they're discussing this on The View right now! Here's a quick recap:

Sherri (who has an only child but wants more) says that she disagrees with the article because the onlies she knows ARE more selfish and self-centered. And even as adults they can't share.

Joy (who is an only and has an only) basically laughed the whole thing off and said something to the effect of she's known what the article is saying for years.

Elisabeth (who I loathe, LOL) sarcastically asked Joy if she funded this study.

Whoopi (who has an only) says that it's true that some kids (and adults) don't like to share, both those that are onlies AND those that have siblings.

Clay Aiken (random guest host, LOL) said something that got "bleeped out"! I think it was something like "The only child thing really doesn't matter. Some kids are just %$#@&$%# anyway!"

Go, Clay! LOL

The other thing that I don't think was mentioned was the fact that onlies, like anyone else, have good friends for support.

I think some people, against all logic, actually DO think that onlies go through their entire life in some kind of vacuum, with no social interaction. Makes no sense.
