I am sorry you are going through this. It seems to be common to revisit bathroom accidents for this age group. The only thing I can think of is to not make too big of a deal about it but do have her start being the one to have to clean up the mess she makes. She has to wash up, put her laundry in to soak, change clothes and clean up any and all accidents. My goal would be to make it take a lot longer to clean up after having an accident during the day than it would be if she just stopped what she was doing for a few minutes and go to the bathroom. I would keep myself as calm as I could because part of this is a control issue. Being matter-of-fact about it will make it less likely for her to dig in her heels and fight you on this for long.

Day time accidents are completely different from nighttime accidents. Night time accidents are a result of biology and not because you can't be bothered to take a few minutes to go to the bathroom.

I was glad to read your post - somehow I thought we were the only ones who were, as you say, "revisiting bathroom accidents." My daughter turned 8 in August and has wet her pants at least 3 times since then and pooped herself once. Do you have any idea how common this is? I mean, do all children this age have occasional accidents, or half, or what?

My daughter went through the same thing right around the time she turned 8, for exactly the same reason: she'd put off going to the bathroom until the absolute last minute and then not make it in time. It lasted about six months, and she wet her pants in some pretty embarrassing places (school, the movie theater, a friend's birthday party) but she did get over it.

I don't have the statistics of how many it happens to but I know from the board and from talking to the teachers and health secretary that it is pretty common among 7, 8 and 9 year olds. Common enough that the office keeps clothes in sizes for them so they can change after accidents. What seems to be the most common is that they wait so long to head to the bathroom that they end up having an accident before they get there. The school and the teachers are very calm about it and just say go to the office and change. Be back quickly. If it happens more than a couple of times they might get singled out with reminders to go to the bathroom at break and lunches or even asked if they went before they head back in after recess or lunch.

I'll reply here also!

Well I think all the other posters said pretty much everything I wanted to say but I still have to add my 2 cents!

My DD is a few years OLDER then your DD and still has problems during the night and very occasionally during the day. (long car rides) She has made GREAT improvement the past year and I finally see an end in sight when I never thought that was possible.

She still wears Goodnites or Underjams(just got them a few weeks ago) and we never once had a leaking accident with either of them. She likes the fact they look and feel like regular underwear and no one can tell she is wearing anything. Maybe you could consider either of these instead of the diapers?

All her doctors agreed that this problem will be a thing of the past once puberty starts (late bloomer, still waiting)so I think you still have a long way to go and just need to hang in there and be patient. She is NOT going to go into high school still having accidents so just relax and keep up the good work.

Keep us posted!

Good luck
