My 8 and 9 yr olds are driving me insane. (Emily just turned 8, and Nick is 9)

I had this same problem with my three boys (11, 8, and 6) but I borrowed a solution from my SIL about two years ago and it has worked like a charm. First I gave one day to each boy and helped them organize their rooms so there was a place for everything. We did the same with the basement. The next time I told them to clean their rooms and they whined or flat out refused I told them that I was giving them 15 minutes to straighten up. Anything left on the floor after that time we going to be donated because there were plenty of little boys who would appreciate these things and take care of them. Of course they didn't believe me. They put a few things away and then stopped. After 15 minutes I went into each room with a bag (the VVA usually leaves a very distinctive-looking yellow plastic bag), shooed them out of the room, and proceeded to fill the bag wtih things on the floor (of course, if I came across GameBoys, Ipods, or CD players, or really expensive toys I put them away but they couldn't see me do this). When I opened the door all they saw was a clean floor and a full bag. I then put the bag on the lawn. There was crying and screaming. I hid whatever I didn't donate for about a week and when they couldn't find it I would say "Well, maybe it got donated" Then I would "find" it while they were out.

I really only had to do this once and now they clean. I also tell them that if they straighten things up after they play, they won't have a BIG cleanup at the end of the week.

The last few days to weeks before school are hard to get through. Hopefully things will smooth out and they will be getting along better, back to helping clean up and into a routine once school starts.

my kids were doing this as well, whined about EVERYTHING. I told them I was not going to talk to them untill they could talk right, I do this everytime and they now know I wont help or talk until they can say it without whining
