Hello!

I'm Liz, mom of 3 kids..2 boys (ages 8 and 5) and one little princess (age 22 months). I have been meaning to post here for a while about this question but never seem to get around to it. Anyways, my question is about personal hygiene for my 8 year old. At what age do kids normally start needing to wear deoderant? My 5.5 year old could get by with a bath a couple of times a week and still not smell but my 8 year old just...so not an option. I am really thinking about buying him some deoderant to combat the smell situation, but seriously..at 8?? Is that normal at this age? I keep thinking he is still so young, even though he is big for his age. He is one of the tallest in his grade (2nd) and not even a head shorter than me (granted I am only 5'1").

Seriously, can someone tell me if this is normal or should I be speaking to his pediatrician about this?

Hi- my son who is almost 9 started using deoderant this past summer because boy, did he need it!! I asked the ped. and he recommended Dove brand since it is mild. Yes, it is made for women but I buy the fresh scent and it is barely noticeable but it helps control his underarm smell. My ds has no skin reaction to it at all.

Hi Liz,

My daughter was 9 when she started needing deodorant, some kids are just more stinky than others. I felt like 9 was young, but if you need it, you need it. I would suggest buying a natural deodorant (like Toms of Maine) or a mineral deodorant and not a chemical antiperspirant when buying for children.

It's normal. The fourth grade teachers at my son's school talk about hygiene at the beginning of the school year and mention that the kids should start wearing deodorant. They just ask that it be unscented (or low scent) and they stress deodorant versus antiperspirant. Tom's of Maine is what we got my son.

Addidas puts out a deoderant without aluminum as well....it can be hard to find but its what I use because I cant get the toms of maine near where I live so i have to order online if I want it.

Just a thought.

I think it just depends on the kid. My niece starting wearing deodorant at about 9/10. My oldest (they are the same age) is now almost 12 and he doesn't need it. I bought it for him to bring to school for gym since he is in MS now and, aside from that being on their supply list, he wanted to be like everyone else. But I don't think he's cracked it open yet. I had to LOL at your son's stats. My 12yo (being the smallest boy in the 6th grade) is only 4 feet tall and weighs 72 pounds.
