State testing

We just got the state testing schedule, Sean will have his first experience at it this year with math and reading.  All of ours  are done on the computer so it's rather spread out.  Will your child be participating this year?  If so, how do you think they'll do?

We had phase one in March and phase two is in May. I honestly don't put much weight in state tests. Not everyone does good at these types of exams. I know some schools in our area just teach the test. Not a fan of that either. Bench marks are good, I have no issues that judge how well students are picking up concept, seeing if there are areas schools  need to work on but the emphasis they put on these tests are here. My poor kid was in a panic and in reality he doesn't need to pass this test until high school. It has NO bearing on his report card, services he can get or passing. He is also on an IEP so he has accomidations but they made him take without them so then he is panicking thinking he is not getting them any more. Last year he just barely passed the reading one but was needs improvement which the school doesn't like but I was VERY happy with. The math he was 2 points short of proficant.

Now we are now on national standards so next year we take a new test so will be interesting to see if things change but for now I tell him, just do the best he can thats all I can ask for and don't worry about passing it doesn't affect your grades.

My kids had theirs a couple weeks ago. I hate all the emphasis that is put on them- it stresses the teachers out which in turn stresses out the kids. My youngest one particularly freaks out over them even though he does really well on them :(

Funny you should mention this since I had just finished reading a really interesting NY times article about state testing/pressure on kids. It's a bit long but a really good read :
