Hi Jen,

I dont believe in "the talk" and have not done that with my kids.

Add me to the group that believes it is an ongoing discussion with answers to questions being age appropriate.

What grade is your 9 year old in? In our school district the 4th grade girls are taught about puberty and the changes. there is a video and parents get to preview it about 6 weeks before the lesson is taught. 5th grade boys and girls have the same lesson plan but separately about a week later.

I really think it has a lot to do with the kid. DS is 8 and he's not quite there yet. I've tried to talk to him about things and he gets all grossed out and silly about it. I don't really understand it. I have an open door to any of his questions, he's just not ready to listen to me yet. A book called- "What's Happening to my Body" was recommended to me. The suggested age is 9-12. They have these for girls and boys. I was told it would be a good thing for him-to read it and know it's really what's going on instead of hearing it from me and him not believing that is really how things are. :)

hello!! they grow up so fast dont they? i have an 8 year old who's almost 9 and my "baby" is 5. both girls. i had the sex-where-babies-come-from talk with my odd last summer. i think she knew a lil because when i paused for words to describe the actual act she filled in "the hot dog goes in the hamburger bun??" that was perfect-lol-so i think she knew a lil. the puberty/period talk just happened 2 weeks ago. it was not easy. i just named all the parts-the right names, too, i didnt sugarcoat-and basically gave her a rundown of what to expect. shes already developing breasts and then about a week ago, i also discovered some hair. so i think shes going to be having the joys of puberty quite soon. i dont know about books-i just talked from my experience. but you just basically have to just do it. if you struggle for words thats okay. take care!!!

Does she still believe in Santa? I also figure I would not talk about the birds and the bees while she still thinks a bearded old man comes down the chimney to deliver presents.
