Cub Scouts - What to do?

Hi.  I'm new to this board, but I am interested in knowing if anyone else is struggling with whether or not to sign your sons up for cub scouts or boy scouts this year.

My son is entering second grade, and he loved cub scouts last year.  It was a great experience and all his friends were involved.  It was good for him in many ways.  However, I don't like the idea of passively supporting an organization that blatantly discriminates against people based on sexual preference.

Is anyone else feeling torn?  What decision did you make and how did you come to that?

Thanks,

Lulu

We chose not to allow our sons to join and it was a very hard decision at first. Dh was very, very involved as a youth/teen, as were his parents and brother. However, we found that when we asked ourselves, "what if the Scouts didn't allow black or Jewish boys to join?" it became very easy to answer. Not everyone realizes that not only are adult leaders barred from participating if they are homosexual, but that the exclusion applies to boys as well. We won't support discrimination, and that's what this is.

It was sad for us, because we really like a lot of what they do. Our younger son was so sports-minded that he had lots of "groups," but older ds was quieter and more thoughtful, didn't really do a lot of sports. I know that Scouts would have done a lot for him (as Girl Scouts did for our two daughters) but I honestly couldn't look myself in the mirror if I let them join.

Hi Lulu and welcome to the board!
It is a tough decision to have to make. While they are a great group for young boys, I have to agree with Theresa, in that, we won't support any organization who blatantly discriminates. And I have to be honest, I did not know their stance until recently.
Kolby was part of the scouts in Kindergarten, and quite frankly, he didn't enjoy it..neither did my oldest son, Tyler. Possibly too outdoorsy. lol.

I had no idea that they discriminated until recently, and I had no idea that their discrimination applied to the scout as well.

Great reply.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, came after what the organization described as a wide-ranging internal review, and despite public protests."

I just wish Boy Scouts could take a page from Girl Scouts and be more open! The sad part is (see article below), now GS is getting flak for being too liberal. UGH! I don't want my scout or scout leader discussing sex  - homosexual, heterosexual or other. Why is this even an issue? Can we get back to camping and community service and learning new skills?

"Saying that the Girl Scouts is a "radicalized organization" that promotes "homosexual lifestyles" and is aligned with honorary president Michelle Obama's "pro-abortion" viewpoint, an Indiana state legislator has told his fellow Republicans he can't support a proclamation honoring the organization's 100th anniversary."

Oh good grief! I really cannot understand why it is even an issue. And, like you, I don't think it SHOULD be an issue during scouts!

Hi, who are they discriminating against? My son is currently in cut scouts. He's been in it for one year and is now a Webelos 1. There is an african-american boy in his den so I don't see them discriminating against race, but frankly, I really don't care to keep him in it anymore because 1) We can't afford it and 2) He's doesn't really care. He hates wearing the uniform and he's more interested in playing at home with the neighbors after school.

They discrimate against gays and lesbiens.  Not allowing parents who are gay to be leaders and even, apparently going as far as to not let the boy participate if he is gay.

Hi Goddess.

They don't allow boys who are openly gay to be a part of it or homosexual adults of either gender to be volunteers.
