Is Facebook Bad For Kids?

A new study says yes. Children are more likely to miss school due to lack of sleep, stress, signs of depression and stomach aches when they spend time on social networking sites. It can also make them narcissistic and do poorly in school.
It sums up that all these are caused by over-use of social networking sites, so I guess it's all in moderation.
I know that many/most of our kids are too young for Facebook, but how do you handle computer/gaming time?

No social networking for my boys yet. Jacob has asked for a Facebook page but I've told him that my rule is the same as theirs- not until he is at least 13. I don't worry too much about computer and gaming time during the summer as long as they are still spending time outdoors and doing other things. The times when it gets obsessive are the times I step in and put a stop to constant playing. It is much more moderated during the school year as well and no games are allowed until chores and homework are completed.

We have those same rules, Kristy. I have to admit, that Kolby has one, but only for the 'ville games, and the computer is within eyesight.

If you are keeping an eye on things, I don't think it is bad that he has one. Some of the games are just way too fun and Cooper has been known to keep an eye on my farm for me. ;)

I think the best thing you can do is just monitor what they are doing. We make the boys keep the office door open when they are online and I go in there often just to see what exactly they are doing. The just bought LEGO Universe with their allowance and that's been the big draw in the last few weeks. They have so much fun playing it (and I've even caught my DH on there a time or two!). I'm good with those type of things. :)

I agree. The boys use DH's old laptop and it sits on the dining room table when they are using it.
