Hi there,

My son had his first real dressy event around Christmas and he did wear a t-shirt under his long-sleeved dress shirt. We tried it without and I didn't like how it looked without one. My husband always wears one under his dressy shirts so perhaps that is why I prefer the look. I was also afraid of him being too hot but he was fine.

white shirts are nearly transparent, that is why men/boys wear a t shirt underneath. For other shirts i think it either makes it look more polished, especially if cold, or protects the outer shirt from the sweat since dress shirts may be laundered differently
