First of all sorry if our name offends anyone, obviously my wife and I were originally on the site for grown-up fun... we were really excited to see that there are discussions for serious topics as well. We have a great in every way 12 Yr. Old who we have grounded, sat in school with for a week at a time, pleaded with, and punished and still can't seem to get him to try in school. He's been struggling with reading and writing for ever. Though his behavior is great and he's a loving little guy enough is enough. We've had him tested and he doesent have a.d.d. Or bad eyesight, we have him sit at the table and do his homework every night followed buy reading. Lately reading out loud has been better because if he silent reads he usually just sits and focus on everything around him, or trys to start small talk with obvious answers just to wast time. Any way we would really like any advice from parents who have been through this.

I'm really glad that you said you've had him tested. Did they check for other things other than ADD? Perhaps dyslexia or other issue that could impact his learning?

You mentioned that you've pleaded with your son and you've punished over and over. I have a son that is only motivated by incentives and punishments don't (and never have!) worked well with him. Have you ever thought about an incentive chart of sorts? Perhaps when he reads a certain number of pages or completes a written assignment he'll earn a sticker that can go towards a larger reward? I know every child is different but this may be an approach to try since nothing else seems to be working.

Wishing you the best of luck. Please keep us posted on how things are going.

Hi, and welcome to the Parents of Grade Schoolers board, I'm so glad you found us.

Do you and your wife read?
